Hi All,

My check engine light came on last nite on my '95 Protege, 1.5L.

It blinks 3 times every so often and when I turned the ignition on and off 5 times I get a code of 5 beeps.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark, ya might wanna get the code that your computer spits out from a shop (autoZone is mentioned a lot in this forum as doing it for free).

There are ways to clear the error, but that won't help you figure out why it came on in the first place.

My check engine lite came on after letting my daughter drive ... and I cleared it. After 150+ miles it hasn't re-appeared and now has me "wondering".

Sorry I couldn't help more.

I have a 99 Mazda Protege that keeps coming up with a P171 error code, System too Lean (Bank 1) . Any thoughts how to correct the problem?

I got the P171 error as well and it turned out to be that the breather hose was cracked and I was loosing vacuum. A bad air filter will cause the error as well. Most autoshops will try to sell you an new O2 sensor, but keep in mind that if there were a problem with the sensor you would have other error codes as well. Check the line that goes from the breather tube to the intake manifold for breaks as well.

In addition to checking the breather hose (rubber air intake duct) for cracks, check to see if there is any carbon buildup on the throttle plate. If there is, this can be easily cleaned off with a little solvent and a rag and toothbrush.

I have a '95 Protege and my air intake tube cracked from age. A new one was $40-$50 from Mazda.

According to Haynes, diagnostic trouble codes can be cleared by detaching the negative battery cable then depressing the brake pedal for more than 5 seconds. If the check engine light comes back on, you still have the problem.
