I am contemplating the purchase of a Disco II 1997 with 80k miles.

Am I asking for it, or will this puppy run for 200k like my Pathfinder did?

Im not gonan be taking it off road or at least I "dont intend to" (for the wifey if she reads this post) Mainly it will be a vehicle to drive clients to show properties in. And a more Testosterone enhanced Mini-Van to Haul the kids around.

I think they are beautifull vehicles , I am just afrain of the "Unknown", any problems taht seem to pop up on them that I shoudl look out for?

Any things you can think of for me to ask the current owner?

I really appreciate it!

Thanks,

Giant

Well my father has a 96 and it has 100k+ on it and its still going strong. However the one thing you need to understand about Land Rovers is their a little finicky. Like with our Discovery nothing major has gone wrong with it even though we and the people who owned the car before us did heavy off roading. However little things like the check engine light used to always come on. And the speedo died. We did get the problem fixed finally, turned out it was a stupid little plastic part. So other then little things the cars are solid and go forever. How much are they asking?

$7500.00 its actually got 77K miles on it. I dont "mind" little things going wrong, im pretty inclined so i can fix most small things, but BIG things like valves, lifters, engines, transmissions, etc. are what scare me

I want to expect at leats 200 thousand miles outa this thing..I like to drive my vehicles for that long before I get another.

Thanks for the quick response

make sure the services have been done on the vehicle. but other than that they are expensive to maintain if they break down

They are pretty much only expensive if you get them serviced at the dealer. If you do some looking, you can find parts that cost about as much as any other normal suv's parts, and if you know of a good mechanic near where you live, they won't charge any more to work on a land rover than to work on any other car. In fact, they might charge you less cause Land Rovers are so simple. If you end up buying it and ever do need cheap parts, let me know and I can help you out.
Land Rovers are in a league of their own though, that's for sure.

That’s for sure the dealer near me charges an arm and a leg. My father tried them once and it cost a couple hundred just for them to run a diagnostic. So now we take it to a friend who is a mechanic and even though he hasnt worked on very many LR it didnt take him long to figure them out. And he does a diagnostic for free

I have a 99 disco and love it! Land Rover overbuilds everything, even the lug nuts are twice the size of most other SUVs. Of course that can be good and bad. Its great because they're durable and can go for a long time. If you can do the maintainance yourself you can save a lot of money.
My brother is a big guy with a long torso and he is always hitting his head on the ceiling of cars, even larger cars. He said that my disco is the most comfortable car he has ever been in.
Its will be a great taxi vehicle to show properties but the gas milage isn't great and with gas prices rising it may be something to consider.
