1998 V6 Check Engine Light

My '98 626 V6 is at 63,800 miles and the check engine light has come on, but has no symptoms of any kind. The manual tells you nothing, and I wondered if someone can tell me what it may indicate, and what is the procedure to get it shut off? I suspect it may be for the timing belt, but it has already been replaced. Could it be for O2 sensors, and if so, how much are they? If not, any suggestions would be appreciated.

lolz bro, we are true brothers in cars.

i have exactly the same car with exacly the same problme, the only differnece is that mine has 10k miles less.

back to business: my check engine light is on and it will come on and off perioticaly. i had a guy hook up the computer and check the code and it was indication that one of the o2 sensors was not functioning properly.. my car does smell like it is running rich(fuel smell.)

so the thing to to is to take it to a mechanic/dealer that can hook up the special computer thingy and they will be able to find out why the light is on and hopefuly resolve your problem. i havent had the time to mess around with mine.

please reply and let us know what the problem was and how it was resolved. thanks.

I am having the same problem with my check engine light. I have a 1997 626 and I had it hooked up to the "computer". They couldn't find anything wrong so they just reset the light. It came on again and they hooked it up to the computer again. They found that one of the oxygen sensors had gond bad and replaced it. Two weeks later it is back on.

I want to know if anyone has had any success with this problem before I sink anymore money into it.

Thanks! Deanna

Hi all, I'm new here but I read on this forum alot, I have a 99 626 and my check engine light came on and would go off, I found out that the problem was that that gas cap wasn't put on tightly. If you read your gas cap it says on there that check engine light will come on if not put on tight enough. So that was my problem, I just put it back on tightly and reset my car and everything was fine. Hope this helps

The check engine light on my 1998 626 came on and I was told it could be the oxygen sensor as well. Unfortunately, that was the beginning of my TRANSMISSION problems! I have no idea if one is related to the other, but take it to a dealer to get it checked out.

I had the same problem in my 99 626 (arnd 60K miles). Took it to the mechanic who said one of the O2 sensors had conked out...but he managed to reset the code by hooking it up to his computer so I didnt really have to do much about it.

I have a very similar problem on my '98 626 V6. Sometimes, the check engine light is on and sometimes it's off. The car seems to run fine though. Somewhere in this forum, some guy had mentioned that AutoZone will read you the diagnostic code for free. Well, I called my local AutoZone, and sure enough he said to bring the car in and they will get me the diagnostic code for free. I have not done that yet. But, it is good to know that AutoZone will not charge you for getting the diagnostic code for you.
