There's no shortage of stupid people behind the wheel of SUVs, where I live. Just a month ago, some little woman in an Excursion destroyed my brothers car, she T-boned him, he had the right off way - she didn't, but she tried to go anyway.
Just today some impotent middle aged man was driving his suburban at 35mph in the 45mph zone and braking for even the slightest curve or slope, so I passed him. A couple minutes later he's right on my bumper, and then passes me and continues to go 50+ in a 40mph zone!!! I'm sure that passing a little eco-box and speeding made him feel big and manly.:D

What the hell is everyone deal with SUV's? It seems if you drive a car then you have a problem with em. Doesn't make sense to me, they like em just like you like your car so do blame it on the SUV blame it on the idiot driver that shouldn't have their licence anyway.

I hate the @$$hole drivers no matter what they're in...but I hate the fact that the SUV is so high off the ground as to have headlights that shine straight into my rearview, and SUV's don't have to meet fuel-efficiency or pollution standards, and also because of their height, they are 3 times as likely to kill me in a collision.

Nobody drives SUV's here because it costs about $200 to fill them up- but I remember driving in New Zealand and being followed by dickasses in Nissan Terrano's fucking shining those spotlamps in my freaking mirror- or when tossers n range Rovers could never pick what lane they wanted or when idiots in Audi Allroads opened thier doors into my car because it was hard getting out of thier jacked up viechle.

I understand about the lights in shining in the back, I get it all the time b/c my truck is lowered(i like to be low). But SUV's meet EPA emission standards, they have to. I really could careless about fuel efficiency, but thats just me. The big SUV's(i.e. Excursion, which is no longer produced) gets just the same mileage as a high performance exotic car. My dad has a Tahoe(he drives like a granny, hehe), and gets a constant 18mpg. Even when I drive it, and I drive however fast traffic is flowing so normally like 80, and it still gets the same thing. One suggestion about the lights shining though, get your rear window tinted really dark, i have mine done and it helps a lot.
What?, how can you say SUV's suck, you drive an '02 Ram, thats just as big as any SUV, hell it drawrfs my Silverado.

I hope that is true because Excursions are just too obnoxious. There only reason for their existence is to piss people off. They get about 8MPG & look ugly as sin:bloated: I get 20MPG in my Suburban when its driven conservatively. I rented a Pruis for a day & got 26MPG trying to drive the same speeds... so I don't feel too bad about the gas issue.

Sure they meet the emission standards - but because they're classified as "heavy trucks" (as is anything over 6,000 lbs) they only have to meet a DIFFERENT standard, which allows up to 3x as much pollution as from a regular car or light truck.
This means the manufacturers are actually rewarded for making the cars heavier, because then they have less stringent emissions standards to meet.
The gov'm't is currently phasing in new emissions standards that would require heavy trucks and SUVs to pollute much less, starting in 2004. Funny, that's also when the Excursion disappears.

Its the old worn out cars that have been on the road for twenty years that spew ten times the stink that SUVs do. Its not just how much it spits out when its new, its how bad they get from poor maintenance that causes more problems. In other words its not all about MPG - or MPK for you "other guys" ;) but about the engines efficiency.
Note: I know that Global Warming is BS but that doesn't mean that I want the fumes of inneficient engines to billow out more smog.

We need to clarify exactly WHAT we're talking about when we say "SUV":
My Suburban is registed as a station wagon:bloated:
It is not over 6,000 lbs & meets the same emissions standards as the pickup trucks do (same engine).
It emits less than 1/2 the pollutants the 1982 Mercedes 380SL I used to mob around in.
It handles on par or better than a Chevy Cavalier.
SOOOooo... As I said before, I'm glad to see the Excursion go:sun: Before I bought the Sub I test-drove Ford's products. Both the Excursion & the Expedition lived up to the SUV stigma (IMHO).

And actually I think any truck under a 1-ton or maybe 3/4 ton is considered a light truck. And whats more dangerous, an SUV or one of those older cars, thats built out of solid steel? I'm willing to be you're more likely to die in a car crash from getting hit by one of those steel machines, then a fiberglass and plastic SUV.

Actually it has less to do with how the other car crumples, and more to do with the bumper heights. Currently cars are designed to best absorb impact delivered at the height of their own bumper (this includes the sides as well as the front and back of the car) and when force is delivered above that level, it can be lethal to the passengers.
If that impact is delivered higher, especially in a side-impact or "T-bone" collision, the force can be lethal. The front of the SUV bypasses the reinforcement altogether, and sometimes (if the SUV is "jacked up") the SUV enters the car through the window, hitting driver and passengers directly in the chest and head.

The proposals are meant to address a central problem with sport utility vehicles and pickups. When such vehicles hit a car from the side, an occupant of the car has 29 times the chance of dying of a person in the sport utility vehicle or truck, Dr. Runge has said. When a car hits a light truck from the side, occupants of both vehicles have an even chance of dying.
New data from the traffic safety agency further illustrates the problem. For every 100,000 crashes involving a large pickup truck and another vehicle, there are 293 deaths in the other vehicle. For S.U.V.'s there are 205 deaths in the other vehicle.
By comparison, there are only 104 such deaths in the second vehicle when it is in a collision with a minivan; they are designed more like cars and ride lower to the ground than most S.U.V.'s and pickups. The number falls to 77 when a midsize car collides with another vehicle.

Link didn't work so I don't know where you got the numbers from so I don't know how credible they are. Well I guess I'm just at as much risk as any body driving a car if a slightly jacked up truck t-bones me since my truck is quite low. But anyways the new cars are being built strong in the door and side panel regions. And a lot of the new SUV's are coming built with a lower front bumper for just that reason. I guess it doesn't really bother me if people dislike or what I see here, hate them, it just bugs me that people bitch about shit way too damn much and need to just accept things the way they are and realize life isn't always fair and we don't all get what we want.

I think the biggest reason people are annoyed by SUVs now is lack of mudflaps. Older SUVs have them, but I haven't seen a single SUV produced during this century so far that has them!!! This means that all sorts of road crap gets flung up onto other cars... It's almost as if engineers designed SUVs to be as annoying and inconsiderate as a vehicle can be!

But thanks for all the suport guys. It is mostly just the stuped drivers but the SUV are made for the dumasses (mostly) Ohh and Steel dont try to over take too many SUV's they have retard drivers that never look around for other drivers and being you have a small car they just might be stuped enough to run you over!!!!

Okay, so what about soccer moms in mini vans, rushing in and out of rush hour traffic to get nowhere fast! How about wanna be race car drivers who think the roads are their personal road course and other cars are just stationary objects to try and avoid. What about cars with loud boom boxes that literally hurt your ears. There's all kinds of assholes out there. And really, are you an angel when it comes to driving? Have you never fudged on a stop sign, lane change, speed limits, etc? I drive an SUV, so don't say you're holier than me. I get my share of road damage and dings.

I think that SUV's are more annoying simply because they're so big and noticeable, not to mention their general lack of purpose...
I can't say I've ever seen somebody actualy "use" an SUV, and I live in a semi rural area! (they're just beginning to pave over the last of the dirt roads around my house) I've taken my 2hp moped over rougher terrain than most SUVs will ever see! it's totally pathetic!

My Wifes Explorer gets a consistant 21 mpg on the highway with 96k miles on it already, She's a excellent driver. She loves her Explorer and I've already ordered her a 2003 which should be delivered in May, Now don't go bash all SUV's. Its the driver who makes the vehicle. I myself have seriously considered a new 4wd Power Stroke Diesel Excursion so I can stop putting so many miles on my BMW which my daughter plans to start driving this year when she gets her license. After this conversation I'm convinced that that BIG TALL EXPENSIVE Excursion is the only way to go:flipa: :finger:

On a side note, on my 280 mile drive last night I was only cut off by Civics & Camrys. If we have a common enemy, I firmly believe it is the bland masses of Camry drivers taking over the roads:D
I resent that!! Both the cars my parents own are Camrys!!:finger: :p

Actually its the Accords that try to pull in front of me when I'm pulling my 35 ft fifthwheel that weighs in at a hefty 17500 lbs behind my 1988 Chevy Dually CrewCab. I don't brake for them anymore though, I just flash my lights at em and if they don't move then they are in for more trouble then they can possibly handle.

That does piss me off when people pull out in front of me and then don't bother to get up to speed. They just putt along at 25 mph when the speed limit is 50! I tend to get right up on their asses if they do this, I don't care if its a truck or car or SUV, whoever does this pisses me the fuck off!!!

Sorry, the big, tall bumpers and headlights still piss me off. :o
I sympathise with the "people pulling out in front of me" thing, that happens a lot here. My motto has always been "Drive as though you're invisible, but make sure you aren't". I.E., drive in such a manner that no one has to slow down, speed up, or swerve to accomodate you, and use Daytime lights and signals whenever applicable.
