This is from CAR magazine, im pretty chuffed with everything it says:

The 911 and Boxster have helped Porsche become the world's most profitable car maker, and theyre still selling so fast Porsche reckons they dont need replacing until 2007-8.
In the meantime, the current 911 gets a heavy rework in 2004. Codenamed 997, it gets upright wings, round headlamps, restyled bumpers and slimmer doors to recreate the warpish profile of the much-loved 993.
Bigger wheels and brakes plus widened suspension are natural, and the cockpit is more like the Cayenne's. The flat six goes from 3.6 up to 3.8l, and power is from 320 to 340bhp. A six-speed tiptronic is optional. The overdue direct petrol injection system will spawn a 375bhp 911S in 2005, between C2/C4 and the Turbo.
Before the 997, we get a second batch of current shape 380bhp GT3's (March 2003) and a Carrera 4S cabrio (mid 2003) and Turbo cabrio (2004).
In 2005, the Boxster gets a visual makeover and more power, and theres a fixed-head coupé version for 2006.
The all-new 911, or 998 is really two cars: a rear-engined flat six 2+2 as well as a V8 or V10 powered mid-engined two seater. This will be the basis of Porsche's next race car.
Add a third sports car to the list (a large front-engined coupe/convertible), and you can see why the Porsche family wants boss Wendelin Wiedeking to extend his contract.

My opinions: 997 styling to go back to 993 days: excellent!
New GT3, 911S, turbo cabrio: yes, thank you thank you thank you!
V8 powered mid-engined 2 seater: i wasnt too keen on a V8 in a 911 but this wont really be a 911 so its no longer a problem. If its a V10 like the arriving Carrera GT it will also be awesome.

Conclusion: give that wendelin dude a pay rise! :D

cheers,
jay

I pretty much agree with your sentiments Jay, but have to add my own 2 cents...

Ditch the Boxster, and go back to a front engined entry level car! There is a huge following of 924 and 944 owners who would sacrifice life and limb for a new 924/944/968...

The 996 GT2 is criticised for its wild handling. It doesnt handle like it should, it doesnt handle like the previous GT2 or a 996 GT3

The GT2 handles like a factory racer should, completely brutally :D

As for the Boxster, I can't say the boxster is a better car than the 968, because IMO it's not. If Porsche had taken the money they threw into the boxter and spent that on a next generation 968, I would be happier with Porsche. The 924/944/968 series were great cars, and hauled Porsches ass out of the financial fire... now they are cast aside like so much used tissue paper :(

Do you know much about the 968 Turbo S? Now theres a car... Imagine a factory 968 16V turbo, or what the next generation front engined car could have been like!

Brutal, yes. But thats not a good thing. The GT3 is a factory racer and handles infinitely better than the GT2 according to everyone who's driven both. Peter Dumbreck tested the GT2 and said it was unpredictable and the handling not quite sorted out. Thats a big-time racing driver saying that, im sure he knows what he's talking about.

As for the 924/944/968's, they are indeed very fine cars, the 968 Turbo S is an awesome machine, but you strongly underestimate the Boxster. Anyone who denies it status as a true Porsche should think again.

I wouldn't know how the GT2 drives, I haven't had the pleasure of driving it :( I know the GT3 is very well balanced, at least from what I've read on it.

As for the Boxster, the people who say the Boxster isn't a true Porsche are the same people who say the 924/944 are not true Porsches, because they are front engined and watercooled...

There are many many front engined & watercooled sports cars. Do you mean some dont see 924s and 944s as true Porsches because of these two features?

i didnt knew that about the gt2 i thought it was a very good car that handled like the turbo!

well, the GT3 is the finest handling 996, by quite a distance. The 4S is also very very good, as is the pre-revision standard Carrera. The Turbo handles very well but perhaps lacks a little involvement. The GT2 is wild and doesnt connect with the driver as a race car should. dont take it from me. Experienced Mercedes Le Mans driver Peter Dumbreck drove it and said it was fantastic but sometimes a little deceiving. this is pretty much what i've read/seen elsewhere.

A new, lighter and more powerful 381bhp GT3 is coming out very soon, btw. It will also have better braking; this is gonna be a hell of a road car.

Oops, thank you for pointing that out Jay :o

Yes, that is exactly what I meant, there seems to be a fair number of people who only consider the 911, and maybe the 912 and 914 as Porsches.

I'm looking forward to the new GT3, I can only someday I'll be able to afford one... ;)

When people start talking of "true Porsches" this and "true Porsches" that i just close my ears to protect them from the bull sh*t that usually accompanies these lines :D
