A sneak peek: (read: my only pic :()
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/123797tn_DCP01249.jpg
This is an awesome kit. I picked it up for $5 at a recent swap meet. Mine includes the motor as well as all the electric parts like switches and wires. The only thing not included are the light bulbs for the working headlights. I kinda think the driver figure looks like Judge Reinhold. LOL! :p I may save the figure for another kit....
I prepared and primed it, then put on several coats of TS-33 Dull Red. Believe it or not, "Dull Red" is a flat color. That's what you see in the pic. I'm using it as a basecoat for Tamiya X-27 Clear Red. It's got a few coats now, and it's a wonderful deep, dark red, but it needs a lot of polishing... :)
Updates to come...
edit: I forgot to mention my methodology for this kit. Since the body paint and polishing takes me so long, I will not even start on any painting or assembly of the rest of the kit until the body is done. :o Should keep me motivated, since I can't wait to get that motor hooked up! :p

Jay! You're finally making something:)
Emm~ Nice RX7~ that's very smart how you're using a clear red over a dull one.

Hi Jay,
Looking good sofar!
Be careful with using Tamiya clear acrylics as a top coat:
apart from a long curing time (several weeks or more),
the coat on my model started developing small cracks after 10 years ! :crying:
If you plan to use the 'rotary' wheels in the kit, the recesses between the
rim and the rotor are painted in a dark brown metallic color on the real car.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~erix7/pics/rx7wheel.gif
Do you really wint to fit that electric motor ???
Be careful not to damage the model when 'driving' it !
If you have a set of Fujimi drivers, the spare heads in that set will fit the
Tamiya driver figure prefectly :p
Best,
-- Eric.

Jay, is that a Star Wars Action Fleet base in the background? :alien2:
An idea to make the acrylic topcoat tougher would be to cover it in a lacquer or enamel clearcoat, just a thought..

Why not acrylic clearcoat? Chances are that an acrylic clearcoat will not yellow with time.

It's been stripped, since I didn't like the effect of using clear red as the over coat. The CSC took off most of the paint below the windowline the first time it was dunked, but I put it back in the CSC upside down to get the rest. It's still soaking.
I'm waffling now between this dull red color with a simple clear coat to polish, and black with a dark red stripe. There's a black FB with a red pinstripe in the parking lot at work, and I kinda like it. But then on the other hand, plain dark red plus all the black trim may end up with the same effect. So I think I'll stick with dark red...

Hm, just a thought..you probalby could have cleared off the Clear Red with a dunk in rubbing alcohol (or maybe rags soaked in it!) since the undercoat is lacquer, it won't be affected!

now I have one question, the left wheels on the pic ,did they also came with the RX-7 ??
Because they oddly look like the Alpine Wheels I have been looking for long now ?
Keep on modeling, you're on the right track !!

Looks good.
BTW why are you painting it in dark red?
I have a question. if you polish a flat color will it become glossy?

There's a choice of two sets of authentic alloy wheels, one depicting the 'rotary wheels', the other are street versions of the eight-spoke 'Speed Star Mk.III' racing wheels that were fitted to the factory team race Rx-7's of the time.

I don't think you'll be able to make an inherently flat colour become glossy... Without a clearcoat, that is.
As for wheels - dilemma here. The non-rotary ones look better, but the rotary ones look more "interesting", if you know what I mean... :o

I'm also pleased at how the red matches the brown interior. :) More painting today...

CA glue can go bad on you, it has a pretty low shelf life! Some modelers I think, keep them in the fridge to extend the shelf life. Kinda like epoxy glue or putty.
