96 LSI....cargo cover? Also, what is this?

Here's a question for you guys...
I've noticed that on each side of the trunk area there are notches in the rear pillars. It looks as if they were made to hold some sort of trunk lid or cargo cover of some kind. Has anyone seen anything like this? I'd love to find something to cover up my jumper cables and toolbox.

One other thing, while I'm making a post anyway. On my 1.3L, there is a round device attached to the front of the timing chain cover at the top and it is loosely attached to the air inlet hose...what is this device? If you've seen it you know what I'm talking about. It doesn't serve any purpose that I can see......
Thanks!

i wondered the same thing when i got my car (98). but you know, i've never actually seen a rear cargo cover in the last generation hatchback. they were obviously an option... and nobody ordered one.

i called half a dozen junkyards to see if i could find one. nada. zip.

so i ended up making one myself. took a couple of hours. materials were pressboard, half inch doweling and a big piece of clean trunk carpeting from a wreck to cover it. turned out nice. i should take a pic and post it.

that part on air cleaner is a silencer to quiet noise of air going into engine

DIY cargo cover: 95-99 hback

it's thin enough that when i want to fold down the rear seatback, i just drop the cargo cover on the rear seat and fold the seatback onto it, sandwich style.

Just to be more precise... as the intake valve opens a small portion of combustion gases forces itself into the intake charge before it quickly reverses and only then can the intake charge enter the cylinder. This creates quite a bit of noise in four and less cylindered cars. In six cylinder or higher cars there is more pulses that cancel out most of the noise. It is just a way of adding more volume to the intake sytem to help minimise noise.

I found one off a 96 Swift but I sat it down to get some more parts and a guy rolled his wheel barrel over it. I have yet to find another (or the guy who ran over mine :( ).

I see them on e-bay now and again.
