what are you painting? r u painting the orange part on your taillights red? well, in order to do that you have to have transparent spray paint so your lights still shine through when you brake. so go to walmart, go to the model section, and buy some candy apple red transparent spray paint for models, the little can. use that without primer, and then put a coat or two of clear coat on there. no prob. of cource you have to mask off spots that you dont want painted.

Im painting my altezza style tails that I had sittin around and I just bought some Testors Candy Red paint 3oz can for 2.89 and the high gloss clear for 3.19 to give u an idea.
I havent finished yet so I cant say how good it works. Im working on the clear coat now. I just hope all is well when I remove the masking tape from the lights!

You ran out all ready, I did my whole set of taillights with one 3oz can.
I finished my lights too and I must say they came out better than expected.

if you want to paint the outside of your house, do you paint the inside wall hoping that it shows on the outside? Your tails aren't like glass, if you paint the inside red, the outside will still be orange. You can do the inside and the outside, but you have to be sure to do the outside. :)

Oh yeah, and make sure you get candy apple red and not candy apple grape. I accidently did, and this is how it looks. Not bad, but not really red, it's on my mazda. :)

Yup, I just repainted mine beacuse of this. What's best to do is paint them at night and put your lights on and paint till they look red.

its it possible to "smoke" the whites on the Si red/white tails? will the lights show clear? cuz i think the smoke will look nice on a black car IMO

Yes it is. But I know a guy in Canada that will do them for you for $45 shipped, and they'll be glossy.
