Grinding...???

Hey all, I have been having this problem, or I guess you could call it that. Often times when I am putting it into first gear, I get an annoying grind before it drops into gear. Any one know why, and how I might correct it. The only thing I could think of was somehting with the linkage?

Welp, thanks all. And if this is a dumb question that I could have easily found the answer to, feel free to slam me. ;)

are you shifting into first while rolling forward? Mine will make a slight grind if I do that like when i try to blast through a stop sign real fast.

If it does it all the time, the most common problem are the syncros.

Well, it could be linkage or what trmi-nate said, but I guess the first thing that comes to mind is make sure you are pushing the clutch in the whole way....just a thought, not trying to make a smart ass coment or anything

Hmmmm, well, yes I do put the clutch in all the way though. :D
But, yea, come to think of it, I often am rolling slightly when it happens.
Will that always cause a grind??

Thanks for the feedback.

i NEVER downshift to first unless i'm going under 5mph... if you notice... most of the time, it will be hard to push it in first while rolling. must be a reason.

i don't do it because my car lunges if i do

speaking of cluthes..........

a couple of months ago, i went to start my car one afternoon and i pushed the clutch to the floor and tried to start my engine. nothing happened, nothing at all. i then pushed the clutch in and out and then it started. well...i don't know why it did that but my question is....can u adjust the clutch on civics or not? if you can...post up a how-to or something.

thanx alot

93 ex and the shifting seems kinda hard (I bought it used and it came that way with a fairly new clutch). If I stick it in 2nd then first it is much easier, but now 2nd is getting sticky too :( R also tends to grind unless I drop it in a gear then go to R. Similar to your problem?

well if the car grinds into gear its most likely the linkage or a synchro. although other things can cause it like chipped teeth on a gear etc..

as foir the car not starting when you push the clutch in, i would most likely say the switch is going bad or has corrosion on it or has a bad wire somewhere.

I know this post is ancient, but it's because there's no synchro to shift into 1st gear. It's just sitting there chillin, and then you're like slapping teeth against it to make it move.

Motorcycles are the same way. Try shifting into first while a motorcycle is moving - It's a little more common because you're using your foot and people tend to apply more pressure than you will on a car's shifter, but if you do get it into first while rolling more than like 1-2mph, there's generally a significant *clunk*. If you don't hit it hard enough, you'll either grind a bit, or it just won't drop into gear at all, you'll pop into neutral.

This is just my understanding of the matter, there's a chance I'm wrong because I'm far from a transmission expert.

it's your linkage. right where your shifter connects to the linkage. you might have worn out a boot. if worse, you might need a new tranny.

yeah i got the same problem with my 95 ex and i was told that R isnt syncro'd at all and thats why it grinds. as for first, i have to be going real slow before ill shift to it cuz it just crunches. i wouldnt say anything wrongs with it.
