Tire type/manufacturer poll

Ok, just for kicks let's use the poll function.

What tires do you use on your Xterra? If you still have stock tires (shame on you) or ones not listed, select "other".

If you have two sets of tires, list the most aggressive ones, or the ones you like best.

Okay, I voted for "other" (as have 30% when I voted);
Those of you with "other" tires, what are they?
Mine are Yokohama Geolander AT's.

I'm running 32" BFG A/T's. I've been happy with them. I gave my stock tires to the poor sap that bought my old ford p'up. I just wanted to get rid of the truck so I through in the tires to close the deal. :)

You're right about ProComps being way off in size. I was originally going to run an 11.50/32-15 AT for a street tire, but the tire is so small that I decided to go to a 265/75R16. Believe it or not, the 265 is almost the same size as the 10.50/31-15 Swamper SSR. The AT 11.50/32-15 is a mere 31.3" diameter compared to the 265/75R16s 31.7" diameter. I am not sure how they got their diameter measurements. Must be cautious optimism.

Dunlop Mud Rover 31"

Look good, sound good, haven't heard anything bad about them. For what I paid I figure they'll be at least nearly as good as anything else out there, if they aren't or if they wear out too quickly, big deal, lesson learned.

Daily driving tires, I just mounted up a set of 31X10.5s Goodyear Wrangler RT/S All-terrains, with a 31X10.5 General Grabber A/T spare.
Nice treads, a little quiet for my taste, but for daily driving they're great. I'll be getting the ARE-767 rims with 31X10.5 Mickey Thompson Baja Belted soon for offroading.

I'd been contemplating the tire issue for about 3 months now, did my research, went with the ProComp MT's in the end. So far, they do drink up a little more fuel, I expected that. But just like the add said, they otherwise have pretty good highway characteristics (ie: aren't loud at all). They grab the dirt really well, I'll see how they when I paint the X with the red, sticky, mud we've got over here in Hawaii this weekend!

Hi all,
Newbie here. :)
I've only had my new 2002 X-Terra for two weeks so I've still got the General Grabber A/T's. I was just wonderin' if these tires are any good or if I should trade 'em out ASAP.
Thanks!
Hex

It depends on what you're using them for. They're fine for highway driving, but I've heard quite a few complaints about their snow ability this winter. If you're going to offroad, then you should look into a set of AT tires.

superjens

Hexgirl, you need to consider what you'll be driving on to evaluate what kind of tires are good for you. If offroading isn't your thing and you'll be mainly sticking to paved roads in non-winter (no snow or ice) conditions, then those Grabbers will probably keep you happy. What some people have done, being able to afford the space and time and money, is stock 2 types of tires. When they hit the trails, they put on the beefy mudders, when they're city driving back and forth to work, they slap back on the original street tires.

For a lot of the people that end up having to consider both scenarios, ie where they need a better tire to handle the offroad trails and they still need to keep their truck's pavement performance in check, they've opted for the AT-type tire (All Terrain). These have proven to be excellent as an all-around great choice, but are probably unnecessary for strictly dry/wet pavement driving.

I've tackled some pretty ugly stuff with my original BFG Long Trails (similar to your Grabbers), and only moved up to MT's because that boyish must-upgrade-now-or-die urge was too strong in me to resist. :D

superjens,
how are your Dunlop Mud Rover 31's? I see your post was almost a year ago, how are the tires performing?

superjens

They're holding up fine. I get stuck in all the same places everybody else gets stuck in, and make it up the same things everybody else makes it through, so honestly I don't see a difference. I think people get too hung up on brand wars and how they look. If these were race cars on a closed track, then I'd be more concerned with what rubber is on the wheels. My recommendation is to buy whatever you can get at a good price if you like how they look.

I'm probably opening a can of worms here ... Schlud ... XOC ... you guys care to comment? You won't convince me but it might be worth it for the other people here! ;)

The Dunlops are two ply. They are basically the old Goodyear MT/R's. The new ones are three ply. You pay for it too.

They are both nice sets of rubber.

I just watch other people's tires and see what they do well in, and what they do bad in. Then I decide on what one fits the kind of driving I do.

When I was in Canada and offroaded sometimes, I used the Pirelli Scorpion A/T. (A great tire, especially for wet and snowy roads).

Then I started getting into mud, and was offroading more so I bought a set of Super Swamper SSR's. Tough as nails, and claws up everything in Washington.

But they're a pain in the ass for daily driving, not to mention the softer rubber wears quickly.

So I bought a set of BFG A/T's. Known for having a tougher sidewall and tread than the Pirelli, but still comfortable for daily driving (they're also available everywhere).

The only thing I would take issue with is some of the cheaper tires seem to have harder rubber. That can reduce grip, but if you air down enough it's sort of a moot point. It basically comes down to buying what your comfortable with spending. Some people would rather drop the extra dime for that extra bit of performance. Others would rather spend it somewhere else.

With car performance tires it's another issue. There is nothing that compares to sticky high-performance tires when hitting a hard corner at speed. :D

At which point does one consider their truck "modified?"

And when the X is "modified", What's the tire of choice then?

Schludwiller
09-17-2002, 12:46 AM
In terms of which tire, you truck is modified when you change the ride height (suspension mods), or body height (body lift). This allows you to use larger tires than 31's. (you can fit a 32 in a stock Xterra, but not comfortably)

OffroadX
09-17-2002, 10:50 AM
If "not comfortably" means the fuel line cover getting chewed up (which is harmless) and having to trim some plastic around the front wheel openings (invisible) then I suppose I would agree. A little torsion bar adjustment is a good idea, but it doesn't take much.

I wouldn't hesitate to tell anyone to go with 32s (short of ones that run large like the SSR) on an Xterra. Hell, the 2002s can take 'em with little if any trimming up front.

An "uncomfortable" fit would be a 32" SSR, or a skinny 33" tire without a lift.

Running 31x10.5x15 Bridestone Dueler A/T Revos...only mod needed was trimming of the inside mudflaps. The X sits about an inch higher then previously with 265/70/15 tires.

Love em!

What tires did you have before? I'm curious, because I hear people liking them, but usually they are their first offroad tire for their X since the stockers. If you did have a different set before, what were the pro's and con's?

Thanks.

I was running Michelin Cross Terrain 235/70R-15; they were on the it when I bought it used. Don't think they came with the vehicle new as it has 45000miles on it when i bought it and I put on another 60000 miles on those tires. Gotta love Michelins for long wear!

Those tires were soft and quiet and when they had more tread; did some novice off roading; although the spun a lot on dirt and needed 4WD most of the time when climbing hills. This is the 1st 4x4 I've owned and had some fun in the sand with them in the desert.

The Bridgestones were suggested to me when I bought my wife a used 99' Jeep Sahara. The seller was freak over the Jeep and told me everything about it. He noticed my X and strongly recommened them to me if when I needed tires (which I was). The set on my wife's Jeep is about 50% gone. He had all 5 Revo's (spare) and kept them rotatated and they are wearing evenly.

I was considering buying the BFG KO from Costco; they were only like $500 out the door! What a deal until I reseached the BFG vs. Revo's on tire rack and the Revo's were highly recommended and clearly passed all types of driving conditions. Snow, mud, ice, rain etc. I read a lot of the threads on this site about Revo's and many guys suggested them too.

So I ended up buying the Revo's from a local tire store in the San Diego area and they ran me about $ including alignment. Firestone wanted over $800 for them! They were hard to find; not many places sold them or had to order them in special.

I can't compare them to the BFG's; but from what I hear the Revo's are a newer design and excellent tires. Compared to the Crossterrains; the Revos are harder; feeling every little crack and bump in the road and have a quiet rumble to them. My shocks are Monroe Reflex's. I have had them in the rain and had no hydroplanning even at 70MPH in a down pour. Off road; well only had them on a flat trail in the desert near El Centro; can't wait to try them (on my Jeep or the X) on a more extreme trail in Big Bear or Octotillo Wells.

Hope this answers your questions.

im running 265/75r15 bridge revos and they are be best tires i have ran.. I used to have a pathfinder and drove it on a set of uniroyal AT's and they are no match for the revos...The tread pattern is just as aggressive as the bfg at's but i think u get a whole lot less road noise from the revos.
