Yes, they said it would happen before it came out, and they were right. I bought my X-box they day they came out, and now it is dead. I sent it in today, and they said that they would repair it, but we'll just see what happens.

I have NEVER heard anyone complain of this happening since the U.S. introduction. Also My bro, sis and myself now have an X-Box and have had no crashes nor glitches. Sorry about your problem but that sounds strange.

I forgot to follow up on this post. A few weeks after it crashed, I was able to track the problem down to my Air Force delta Storm game. It crashed my and a friend of mine's XBox. We had them sent off and repaired and they are working again now. But when Iwent back to return the game to teh store, I found out that they had mysteriously stopped carrying the game. I looked around town and it seems everyone has stopped carrying the game.

Just a coincidence?? I don't know. Maybe the whole damn game was defective. Microsoft claims to have no problems with teh game.

I had a really high pitched noise coming from the xbox once. Called the support people and they sent me a box to return it in. The noise didn't come back, so so far the xbox has stayed with me.

wonder if they mind me keeping the cardboard box?

My friend and I have had no problems what so ever with the X-Box it works perfect. If you ahve any problems at all look at the disk your using, it could be scatched or damaged.

Believe it or not, your next generation gaming console is NOT invincible.

There are several small and a few big problems plaguing all three machines from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.

But don't listen to me, read some of the inquiries from the Watchdog column of GamePro (and really take note, these are just a few of the reported problems; if you're up to it, browse the web for more information):

---April 2002: Q) A few of my friends and I were watching Friday on the Xbox, and the movie started to skip, and then the screen froze. One of my friends turned the Xbox off with the movie still inside, and then turned it back on. Now the Xbox "clicks" multiple times when I turn it on and brings me to a screen saying my Xbox needs to be repaired. I thought potential Xbox owners or current owners should be aware of the problem. Trever--Via Internet

April 2002: Q) While playing Super Smash Bros. Melee on the GameCube, Link started moving on his own without me touching the controller. I turned the GameCube off, and when I turned it on again, it worked fine--until today, when the same thing happened. Is my GameCube busted? Alejandro Tomasi--Via Internet

(I, myself, actually had this same problem with my GC, and it turns out there are some OEM controllers with faulty C-sticks (right analog stick). I simply returned the controller to the retail store. It's not a "power-on mis-calibration" problem, since it occurs randomly throughout play.)

April 2002: U) In our July 2001 issue, we received a letter from a reader who had problems playing blue-bottomed CD-ROM games on his PS2. Though Sony would not confirm that there was a problem with PS2s playing blue-bottomed CD-ROM discs, we've received many more letters from readers who have experienced the same problem--too many to take Sony's response lying down. When we contacted EA about loading problems with Madden 2002 (a CD-ROM), a customer service representative informed us that some PS2s do, in fact, have problems reading blue-bottomed discs. According to the rep: "A lot of PS2s have been scratching up our games. Sometimes, the PS2 will read blue-bottomed discs incorrectly, and sometimes the laser lens will scratch the game. Sony won't say anything about it. If you're experiencing this, try out the game on another system. If it works, it's probably a hardware problems and you'll want to contact Sony's customer service. If it doesn't work, contact EA's customer service."

One of our industry contacts also confirmed this: "This is a hardware problem and not necessarily a problem with the discs themselves. We've seen [these kind of] problems with the PS2s partly due to the fact that unlike the PlayStation, in which games lock into place, the PS2 uses magnets to hold discs in place. CD-ROMs are thinner than DVD-ROMs and tend to wobble more. As a result, the read heads tend to scratch CD-ROMs more than different media types. If you keep your PS2 in a vertical position, the problem is twice as bad."

Sony was unable to give an official response and claims that it has not received any such complaints itself.---

Another well known problem is the PS2 overheating ailment. The PS2 seems to "burn out" and won't turn on. Two of my friends in fact have run into this, and both admitted it was because they rarely turned the machine off, and left it in a dusty corner. People NEED to understand that these machines should be treated more like desktop or notebook computers, rather than old-fashioned bang 'em up Nintendo and SNES sytems, back when you could blow into the cartridge to clean it, and break off plastic bits to play Japanese games (now, we have the ever complex modchip). Of course, if you simply have a defective unit, then that's just bad luck, and you need to take advantage of the warrantee. (I've never had the PS2 problem, but I baby all my systems). One helpful tip might be to invest in a separate DVD-player, instead of racking up more hours on your XBox or PS2. Each movie you watch is the same as 2-3 hours of game time, and it adds up pretty quickly.

Maybe just some individual machines have there own problem, cause I have watched so many movies on my PS2 I have never run into the over heating thing or any problems except my CD rom makes a funny noise once in a while when it is opened. Like I said before my friends X-Box has done nothing, that shows something wrong with it. But i'm not saying that they don't have problems

Now that I have gotten mine back from X-box repair, it is running A LOT better. It will still mess up towards the end of a movie (last 5 mins or so) a lot of the time though. I still can't figure that out. Oh well, my 90 day warranty is gone, and so I am just stuck with it now.

I, myself, have had absolutely no problems with my own PS2.

As for potential next-gen console buyers, try investing in a store bought service plan, such as Best Buy's 3-5 year additional warrantee service. They seriously come in handy for these new machines which, by percentage, are beginning to tend to crash almost as often as some computers do. And these extra plans are all of what, $20 to 40 bucks? The factory warrantee can only get you so far; three months to one year, sending it in... what a pain. With most service plans, you can just drop by your local store where it was bought, and they'll fix it there, or just trade you for a new one (because they can afford to do return-to-vendors, etc.).

My brother has an X-Box and the only problem I have is that blasted connector piece that the controller has to plug into before going into the X-Box itself.

my friends xbox crapped out. he packaged it up, went to EB and sold it to them for $75 store credit, then i went in with that credit later and bought a new one for him for like $50-$75 more dollars. his xbox would freeze up or give disk read errors but he used to smoke around it a lot and he blamed it on that.

I've never had any problems with mine but I just got it a few weeks ago. My brother got his the week it came out and still hasn't had any problems at all, maybe he's just real lucky.

alot of the cannot read your disk problems for the older xbox systems anyway are due to the dvd drive going bad, which mine did a while back

DUH! Blue-bottomed disks are NOT Lisenced products for PS2. Like The Game shark disc is Blue-bottomed!

My xbox had a bad drive, that even after the initial warranty, was still covered because it apparently had so many issues. recently i got the flashing red light, but then the problem went away when i unplugged it...whew!

guess what i've been seeing from the xbox 360, been hearing that many of them aren't working very well, meaning like not at all XD, many reports of them just freezing when booting up and having other problems, of course it is the first gen of it so things should be fixed eventually but if your going to launch something microsoft, atleast launch it with most of them working, either way seems like i'll be getting one XD.
