computer?

OK, I did research, checked the FAQ, and I've read every post that came through here the last few months and couldn't find an answer. I SWEAR!

My question is:

I heard from a freind at uni who races cars on a track that getting a racing chip gives you alot of Hp and really helps on getting more torque out of your engine. Is this true? He says I can get one for around $100 and it gives about 30 Hp. Now he races Race Cars, you know, stockcar racing? So it's probably not so drastic on a civic, but he says its an excellent basic upgrade. If he is right, I'm getting one in August when my Warrenty runs out. What I need to know is whether this is true for a 95 Civic Coupe or not? My engine is the stock EX 1.6 liter SOHC Vtec.

honda's fuel and ignition maps are very good if not great from the factory with almost all of thier cars (except mine) with harnessing power out of what is given. mods add a whole new perspective on that though. basic mods will not require anything because of the ecu's ability to compensate. more aggrasive mods like big cams or headwork or turbo will need another item to optimize them. chips are not often spoken highly of with honda's because mods are always changing and there is truely no chip that can change with you. once you reach the point of no control from the stock ecu the only way to go is an engine management unit be it a basic pms or a full blown haltech or hondata. unfortuatly quik hp chips or quik hp for that matter for a honda does not exist that cheaply.

out of curiosity what kind of car/motor/setup does your friend have?

From a chipped computer you may get 10hp the most. And if you chip your ECU you should also upgrade your internal engine components like springs, valves and retainers. Cause most chipped ECU rev higher and the stock engine can't handle lofty RPMs.

Well, I'm not sure really what his engine setup is, I am going down to watch him race sometime in the next moth or so, and I'll tell you then. Maybe take some pics too :) We aren't really best friends, more like close aquaintances. But he is quite knowledgeable.

oops, just saw this.

So it does help, but not easily eh? Sounds like alot of extra money goes into making the chip work with the engine. Internal engine components isn't something I can do myself, and labor for that kinda stuff ain't cheap. Sos I guess I'll hold off on that until I can get me a different daily driver and then just tool around with this old bucket. :)

GSR Turbo??? Hmm, something in those two words tells me "heavily modified" but I can't quite pinpoint it. Maybe you can help me there.

Haltech makes EMS for extreme engine mods. Getting one for your SOHC engine will get you a waste of perfectly good gas and money.

sure ecu's work wonders on honda's but only if they are turbo or have some nice all motor mods like cams and headwork. on a stock car or and i/h/e car or pullies and an ignition it wont do barely shit if anything at all. the stock computer is already able to adjust the fuel +/- 20%. there is also the learning factor, people are starting to find out that piggybacks that alter incoming signal's like a vafc become learned by the ecu and you have to reset it every once ina while to take advantage of it. and when it comes to jet chips, i wont even comment on that.

yo homey i think its time to pop a valium. i cant recall saying anywhere that you didnt know what your talking about. and from reading your post it seemed as if you were tellin the kid that a 1000$ engine management system is what he needs. i guess if i would have opened my eyes slightly i would have saw you were trying to get rid of the fucker......MY BAD. as for experience in "the field" dont worry man ive seen, been involved, and done alot of shit. christ i worked in a honda garage for 3 years....sure it may have been a general maintenence position but im not blind or deaf. and as for intelligent shit....well im sorry you dont like to talk intelligent anymore but when someone asks a question i give an answer to them that i would tell my best friend, unless its a dumbass newbie question that could have been found easily by searching. this is a technical help board and i think people deserve a legitimate answer for a legitimate question. so if one of us writes an in depth answer or topic about how an intake works or how to swap a motor or what not im sorry it offends you but it goes with the ground and who knows we may have made one more person intelligent enough to not become a ricer.
