Nice work, Mike!

Looking at the rim, wouldn't it be easier to build up the tunerish 5 spoke into the Crager (or whatever) 5 spoke style rather than remove all that material only to add it again? I know you want deep dish, but wouldn't it be easier to add a deep dish using one of the 2 methods in the how to depository than to remake all that material?

Good luck with it, either way!

Been following this thread since the beginning, and I must say that your project is surpassing every one of my expectations. When you said scratchbuild, you really meant it. Pieces of raw steel coming together under the torch to become an automobile. The metalworker can do this, but it takes an artist to do it and make it look good.

Mike, it's lookin' good.

Heres a quick little "update". Its just a rough sketch of a tap to be tapped into the frame rails for the body to bolt to. it is an extremely tiny part. Soon I will draw it in CAD for a much clearer and accurate view. The drawing was drawn at 50:1 scale, dimensions are the size the piece will be. The hole will be a M1.2 threaded hole. I will drill 1.5mm holes into the frame rails to insert these extremely tiny pieces.

My plan is to use the spokes I have taken out. I will putty them up and shape them into the desired look. Then I will insert them back into the rim. However, if I can get the CNC mill at school working again I will machine the centers out of styrene or 6060 aluminum.

UPDATES:

I spent a good part of the day working on the rim to be cast. Damn thats a lot of work. It doesnt look like much. There are a couple layers of styrene to get it almost flush with the lip of the rim. Then I puttied it up to get a nice flush finish...but still isnt smooth, just look at all the divets.

The spokes that are in the rim are just to give you an idea on my plan. My plan in which I will use the spokes, then modify them, and then set them back in the rim. Believe me, I love the way they look now...but its not going to stay :disappoin.

Hey Mike, thought you might enjoy this link. Project 33 (http://www.project33.com/index.htm) It might give you some motivation and ideas. I've been frequenting that build for a couple years, and have enjoyed it. It may not have the big names like Boyd and Foose or whoever you like so much, but it's a good build nonetheless.

Thanks Will! Great site.

Welp, not much of the frame will change today and tomorrow. Tomorrow is my Uncles B-Day, so time to celebrate. Also not to mention I UV burned my forehead welding aluminium. That hurts...

I will try to get some work on the rims done hopefully.

EDIT: I took a crappy cam with me when I went to weld the other day.

UPDATES: (56k users beware)

I guess its a little late warning those 56k users. :evillol: There are 15 pics to come.

Well, I got tired of cross members being welded in the wrong place or falling down while Im welding. So, I made a jig. A $30 jig. Went to St. Lowes this Sunday morning and bought some 16Gage, square tubing, and round bar and built myself a shitty jig that works.

I am also happy to say we finally got a bigger argon bottle. Wooooo-Hoooo!!! Twice the size for the same price as half the size (for refills).

Eh, here are the pics.

UPDATES:

Well, I have to say, there may finally be a chance of getting this complete for NNL. As willimo would say, "your turbo has finally spooled up", meaning Im finally kicking ass on this project. Tonight was the first night I have had extra time, I ran out of shit to weld.

I welded in a few more cross members. I need to build my engine mounts, and front suspension before I attacch many more cross members (I need to see where the drive shaft runs into). So I guess I'll be making my front crossmember soon. I need to talk to my machinist about how long it will take for my shocks.

I'll shut up now.

UPDATES:

Well, I had an hour weld session tonight. In that hour I had to cut, grind, and weld. I was able to get just enough of the front cross member done so I can do a little work on my end making motor mounts and the place for the control arms to sit.

Anyway, the welding wasnt to fun. I was in such a hurry that I didnt bother to check the settings. Somebody reversed the polarity. So it was a bit more difficult to weld, but the welds are still quality.

Here are the pics:

Im really pissed off at how shittily it fits. I need to do some filling and grinding, but what was done is a good bit of progress. Its actually good to be rushed sometimes. Normally I would have taken my time and spent two, three times as long, to do just as well.

So it will have working suspensions !
Is that the prototype for your 1:1 rod ?

The plans are for this project. It will have working suspension and steering.

I tried to take pictures every step of the way on the transmission build. The engine is a testors 1:6 Diecast Hemi 426, bought seperately. Im converting it all to ram air fuel injected.

As far as RC suspension, the coil overs and struts are too fat and ugly. I'd love to take credit for building the suspension too, but I only designed it. Its being sent out to be machined.

UPDATES:

Been working on these stupid wheels. They still need a lot of work before I can cast them, but its getting there. I need to get some tubing to for some detail.

Also now that Mr. Steve Hiroboy decided to raise the bar with his magnificent brakes I have thrown away my styrene brake idea and order $30 work of steel and supplies for my brakes. Now hopefully mine will be at least a quarter as good as his.

Im planning on starting the motor work rather sooner than I planned because November is approaching fast, and I need to get going.

http://mike.nwwo.com/XVI/DSCF0033.JPG

http://mike.nwwo.com/XVI/DSCF0034.JPG

And just an FYI, the centers are still removeable. I'll probably keep the centers seperate from the rim when I cast them for a few reasons: A) its easier to cast B) I can use the mold(s) for other styles of rims C) Easier modification.
