A cheap car to start off with and has lots of potential would be a 5.0 Mustang. Parts are cheap, the car is cheap. The aftermarket is huge for that car.

or you could just get something with an ls1...and you'll never need to mod it since you will win every race by default;)

You'll only get biased opinions which will then turn this innocent question of yours into a flame war of who says what's better.
So please, just read this... and decide on your own. Don't ask a bunch of internet geeks what they think. We'll just tell you to get a Yugo.

what is a ls1 and what years of the prelude have v-tec in them?
LS1 is the motor that comes in '03 Mustang Cobras. It's a new motor design that was originally devoloped back in 1958, but due to its complication it wasn't brought back to the development table till 1995. Then for the next eight years it was designed to be unstoppable.
When Duesenberg was finally ready to release the new Mustang Cobra for the 2003 year, they thought this motor was totally kewl. Except they were out staged by new Honda Odessey.
So what did Peugeot do? Nobody knows? :dunno:
Chrysler then slapped on a Turbo system onto the LS1 and called it a day and put it into the Lincoln family sedan.
That my friend is the complete history of the LS1. And how it cured world hunger and stopped Hitler from taking over Canada.

Well to be acurate the ls1 was developed in 1957 (although 1958 is a common misconception due to faulty carbon dating). And it was developed by Dr. Wankel
peugeout did develop the suboverhead roller cam for it - basically another name for vtec. this decreased its torque significantly but it made it rev faster
and that was not a chrysler turbo its was a mistsubishi basically the same as in the evo which is why the ls1 cars handle so well
no us market prelude comes with the ls1 but you can order a jdm ls1 swap...just make sure it has the peugeout roller cam which is one of the best vtec varriants

Wow there sure are alot of Ls1 hating stang owners here. It must be due to the win loss ratio :) Anyways author i'd advise you to buy a 91 Accord for your first car. Contrary to popular belief new drivers are bound to make mistakes, and hit something (Fender benders generally). The 91 Accord gets good fuel mileage, and is actually rated extremely well in auto accidents. When your ready to smoke the stangs buy an LS1 powered F Body. They won't admit it, but we dyno higher then even their beloved Mach 1 :)

Your lack of knowledge is ruining this thread
Now onto learning how the LS1 works...
The Ls1 is a great engine. During its early development, the Honda engineers/techs started working on the internals of the LS1. Adding Variable Valve Timing and a new gadget called Electronic Lift Control (Usually referred to as suboverhead roller cam like Neutrino pointed out) to variate between the cams the LS1 have. The LS1 is a DOHC engine and is very powerful with its 48 valves. Its completely modular and can be interchanged with other parts from other manufacturors. Its basically a Leggo motor. Look at how well the 03 Cobras do at the track. With its double independant front wishbone suspension and a live rear axle that interchanges to IRS, its unstoppable by any other car in autocross, save for another LS1 powered car but most dont contain the performance suspension the Cobra does.
I hope my share of knowledge, and of the others who participated in this thread, has helped to guide you to the right decision. :).

WTF are you talking about????!!!!! I hope you're talking about variable valve timing and lift control. LS1's have 48 valves, nope wrong. I'm only guessing that you are being sarcastic towards the technology invested in the LS1 engine. Even so you'd miss the mark, cause the engine is probably more complex then the modular engine you love soo much.
Here is a link to information on the engine: http://www.idavette.net/hib/ls1c.html

You guys made my night better. DOnt forget to mention that many companies have tried to copy the ls1's superior variable suboverhead cam technology. I would suggest either an early 90's accord as was mentioned before or a mid 80's chevy nova. Nothing like getting around with 4 doors and excelent gas mileage. Not to mention it will be cheap as hell on insurance. :lol2:

no not even the mighty S7 with its twin roots-type turbos and double vanos VVTL-i technology is a match for the ls1's with variable pushrod actuated twin suboverhead cam rollers especially the ones with 3 rotors

well im 16 so my pops is buyin the car an i figure my spendin limit would be around 7 gs so ive narrowed it down to 4 cars; 94 prelude, 2000 sentra, 1999 altima, and a 95 integra. tell me what yall think is the best one, not just racing wise but also durability an milage thanx
2000LS1Z28
12-17-2003, 12:13 AM
Honestly i'd buy the 94 prelude out of the list of choices. See if you can get a Vtec model (The vtec model has the most aggressive set of variable valve timing. I believe there is an LS and Si model as well). The mileage on them is great. I believe they get close to 28mpg. Funny thing is that that generation of model is quicker then the last generation Prelude. I'm not positive, but I believe it's engine is designated the H22. I'd debate about the LS1, but i'm gonna hold my breath on this one.

Neutrino

i would go with the altima or with the sentra...they athe newest quite practical and they should have a good amount of power...between them i think the sentra would have the most aftermarket
i would stay away from the 94 prelude or 95 integra since they are older plus because of their performance image its very likely to have been abused

Actually alot of women buy Preludes (Well that and sentras). Not all of them are abused. No matter what car you get, make sure to have a mechanic check it out before you purchase it. Don't even think about buying a rental car. There's enough vids out there of people adding nitrous to rental vehicles to scare almost anybody away.

Ok, everyone knows the differences, the LT1 had it's NOS injection through the spark plug, and the LS1 has it through the piston directly. The LT1 was a prototype only motor, with 6 valves per cylinder, 4 exhaust and two intake, with direct water injection through the exhaust valves for enhanced cooling and to lubricate the VTEC bearings inside the cylinders.

well yeah the LT1 had enough NOS to blow itself up and because of bad NOS timing it was unloading in 3rd not to mention frying its piston rings
but they solved the problem in the LS1 using a roots type NOS fogger system

The LT1 was first used by Germans during the WWI and then reintroduced by them in WWII to aid in the rampage when trying to take over other Europnan countries. It was used in planes, submarines, and tanks. Its very powerful but somehow those dirty Germans found a way to supersede their LT1s and came up with the LS1.

Did you know Korea bought the rest of this year's supply of LS1's to power their missles? They take off like crazy, but haven't found one yet reliable enough to make it back across the big pond. Rumor has it a deal has been made with Toyota, while slower in comparison, it can loop the planet 4 times thus making the landing area less predictable.
