Alfa Romeo unveiled this 400bhp, RWD, would-be Porsche 911 rival at the 2003 Frankfurt motorshow. The name is derived from Alfa's rich racing heritage, 8C standing for the old 8 cyl racing cars and Competizione a reference to other past racing cars.
What do you guys think of this car? The pics are pretty big but worth the wait. Beautiful or what? :)

WOW!!!!!! That is what I said when I first saw pictures of this amazing car- a few hints of Lancia Stratos in that'un
crayzayjay

Stratos? hmm.. i dont see it. I do however see Aston Martin in the 8C's profile and a bit of TVR in the rear. The front is all Tipo 33 Stradale :D
This car to me is so much better looking than the Brera, i hope Alfa goes for something closer to this style for its top of the range sports car.
btw, did you check out the Fulvia concept? Hot! The Italians are on a roll :D

Any word on price? I bet it will be super expensive and probably never end up in the US.

I dont know if it'll come to the States but i dont think it'll be super expensive. I should think it will substantially undercut the 911. I wouldnt buy it if it didnt...

Wonderfull, no more to say !
This car will have the V8 Maserati and compete with the 911 indeed. So don't expect it under 50 000 €/US$.
But I think it'll be available in North America as Alfa Romeo is going to come back on this market arround 2009.

been a while stef!
400bhp is plenty, but let's hope it handles too. even the 4200GT can't live with a bmw 645ci (60 less bhp!!) on the twisties!

You know, I think that when we're talking of cars of this powerfull, the figures are not the most important. In this case, choose an other car at this price ;) The comfort, the driving pleasure, the ambiance, etc. are so important when you're buying an exclusive GT as a 6 Series, a 8C, a 3200GT, an SL, an XK, etc. ;)
When you come in Paris, tell me !! :D could be funny a RDV between Automotiveforum users ;)

i agree, the car's ability goes much deeper than the figures... which is why im impressed by the 645Ci outperforming the other two (more powerful) cars in terms of handling...
ill definitely drop you a line next time im in Paris

I'm somewhat shocked that a 6-series outdid the Maserati- the 6 series is a Semi-heavy (ie. Not as heavy as one would expect) car and very refined and over-enineered- compared to the MAserati which is a bit of an Ibiza beach-barbie

I just had to say this one thing before I go to sleep...
If this car goes into production AS SHOWN it will be the most beautiful car since the Dino 246 GT. Performance and handling are unimportant with this baby. Everyone will be placing orders and BMW's Bangle-mobile along with all 911s Modenas or whathave you will die of jealousy!!!!!!

The Alfa's definitly comming to the usa but there's a slight little problem. It would be sold through ferrari/maserati dealers but they are afaraid it might take sales away from maserati. I've heard Price would be around $55,000, so it would undercut maserati in that reguard.

Alfa Romeo might be returning to the US market but certainly the 8C Competizione ain't gonna go for 55000 $US :grinno:
This is from a recent Autocar article (it's a british mag for those of you over the ocean..). Apparently there is serious hope we might get to see this gorgeous babe on the streets....
Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione
Alfa’s dramatic 8C Competizione supercar project is at a turning point as you read these words. In the past few weeks Alfa insiders have been sounding out the possibility of charging as much as €150,000 – or about £100,000 – for the car. They are said to be gauging reaction to the price as this is rather more than originally envisaged. Autocar has also learnt that 600 orders is the break-even point before management will give the 8C the green light. Even so, there’s still plenty of discussion about the car’s fundamental make-up, according to sources.
As part of the ongoing cost-cutting investigations, the carbonfibre monocoque bodyshell will be dropped. It still sits on Alfa’s clever split-frame chassis (and uses some of the Premium platform’s running gear), but the upper body structure may now be built with Fiat’s steel spaceframe technology.
At the moment the three prototype cars are fitted with a 410bhp version of the 4.3-litre V8 Maserati engine, although some of the engineers are keen to use the supercharged version which delivers well over 450bhp. However, cost pressures (superchargers are expensive) could kill the plan. It’s also possible that the car may use a version of Ferrari’s new 483bhp 4.3-litre F430 engine. There’s said to be some disquiet within Fiat Auto about the 8C stepping on the corporate toes of Maserati, with some suggesting that the 8C could steal sales from the Coupι if the Alfa-Maserati divide becomes blurred

8c looks very pretty, but it also looks retro to me; like the 200 (disco lolante) Sportiva - always a bad signe; I'm convinced retro cars like the boxster and that angualr neo arnolt bristol BMW are what killed off those firms; I do designing (visit my web page at www.lcdou.com) and oaint (and tell bad jokes; I snuck out some "alafs" (along with my infamouse n/bugatti):
Hey - what can you do; squeezed em out fast, but my whole loop is negating ( decrete negations I call them); if I'm not carefull I'll be working for GM soon (ha ha ha); hey...anti-money, it work, what can I say: see http://www.lcdou.com/page5.html) How about that almost patented "henry More" rear fender treatment

 what do you mean??? BMW and Porsche are not dead firms. :grinno: The same goes for Alfa Romeo. As for the retro part sometimes it's better to be retro than be original but pig-ugly :22yikes:

Alfa 8c Axed
Plans to put the stunning Alfa 8c Competizione concept coupe into production have been scrapped at the 11th hour. The heartbreaking decision was taken by Luca di Montezemolo because he feared that the beautiful 8c would badly damage demand for the Fiat group's other great-looking rear-drive coupe, the Maserati 4200GT. The 8c was to be built on a tubular chassis, with a revised version of the Maserati's V8 drivetrain, but Alfa could not settle on a pricing strategy. With only a limited production run planned, the 8c would have had to be priced higher than the big-volume Maser, and this was at odds with the overall group strategy. It was also felt that the existing network of Alfa dealers was not set up to handle such a specialised, premium product available in very limited numbers.
There is, however, a glimmer of light to come out of the 8c's sorry demise. Engineers have been ordered back to the drawing board to create a smaller coupe (possibly to be known as the Sprint) based on the next- generation Alfa 147. The team has been briefed to use as many styling cues from the 8c as possible, as Montezemolo still believes in the spirit of the idea. It will be a long wait, though. With not even an outline design in place, we don't expect the car to be ready before 2008 at the earliest.

I don't get it.
The current Maserati coupe is a GT car.
The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione Concept is a sports car.
It wouldn't hurt to build that Alfa.
