Performance Mods for the 2.2L OHV Engine:
Most people with the rather slow and unresponsive 2.2L OHV engine try and speed it up..they add a intake or exhuast and then give up...it can get much faster then stock, it takes a lot of work and bolt on mods but it can be done, and you can be faster then a 2.4L, most people do not take it far enough before they give up...for those that really want to make their 2.2L cars faster, this post is for you guys!
Exhaust, 2.25" piping done at good muffler shop, press bent, not crush bent.
Straight through design performance muffler, tri flanges by stock cat removed.
*Get a highflow cat if you want to move the powerband up and get better top end power...don't get a highflow cat if you don't want to lose some lowend power, I removed mine for this reason. Don't remove the stock cat, without the cat, car loses lots of low end power with this engine from my experience, which is bad for daily driving... top end power is better though.
Pacesetter 4-2-1 header - great gains for the 2.2 engine...quality is not that great on the basic one since it's black paint that will burn off minutes after header is installed and car is running, you should get the ceramic coated one. *Note, this header's downpipe does not fit automatic cars, it will bang on the tranny case, so you will need to get a custom downpipe made. OR, another new choice in town is the OBX Racing header, this is a very nice header, available in stainless steel or ceramic coated, and it's a good price, a real show quality and performing header... only thing to check with this is if it's 4-1, or 4-2-1 design.... 4-1 is the 4 cylinder pipes into once collector..this is good for mainly top end power only... a better design is a 4-2-1, which will see more gains throughout the powerband at the expense of not as good topend power, this is becaue it scavanges more exhaust gasses.
Intake: cold air or warm air, cold air more expensive, warm air intakes will cost from $180 to $300Can... you can make your own intake for about $110Can...I can explain how if you want.
Plugwires: Don't add HP unless very expensive, like nology or Vitek... but help improve starting, fuel economy and smoother acceleration...get magnecore or accel or ractive..$150Can
Crank pulley: turns accesories slower to free up HP for the engine..some drawbacks like dimming headlights at idle, can't have high power stereo, etc.. gives about 6HP, 3-4 at the wheels....$220Can
Throttle Bodies: Stock 2.2L tb is only 52mm, a 58-60mm throttle body will really help mid to top end power, and throttle response... RSM racing (http://www.rsmracing.com) has throttle bodies for the 95-97, and 98+ 2.2L's (95-97 have a one piece aluminum throttlebody/intake manifold cover).
Interceptor: Shift module that firms and speeds up shifting for 4 speed automatic equiped Jbodies only....$175Can
Motor mounts: Rksport mounts upper and lower help stop excess engine movement and reduce wheel hop and help transfer more torque to the ground..does not increase HP. Also needed with a performance header to prevent downpipe or header from cracking from excess engine movement.
Rollerrockers: Our engines have rollerrockers which the pushrods hit and they move like divets opening and closing up the valves... 95-97 2.2L OHV engines have 1.5 ratio roller rockers and this can be improved upon with 1.6 ratio roller rockers. The 1.6 RR not only give your engine more lift and act like adding a mild cam to your engine, but also are roller tipped to reduce friction, the stock ones do not have roller tips... this mod will make your engine run smoother and give quicker acceleration from 3500RPM on up and also make the power kick in right away instead of a 2 second pause before the power hits on these engines. Competition cams is one brand I recommend, but the sets are only sold in sets of 8 or 12, and you only need 4, so plan on selling the extras or finding a buddy to go in with you on it.
Why not 98+ 2200 2.2L's???: They already have 1.6 ratio roller rockers for a smoother engine..but at the expense of a milder cam with less lift to compensate.
For suspension:
Lowering springs for looks and handling improvments, you should get koni struts eventually with this, as the stock struts WILL wear out in 6 months to a year depending on how many miles were on them before you
swapped them with lowering springs.
Front and rear strut tower bars will improve turn-in and stop excess strut tower movement... Gm has a good one, and there is a good one from RSM racing.com for the front and rear, and Rksport....$150 each
Energy suspension control and endlink bushings improve handling a lot, they don't cost much but the installation is expensive... $100 for bushings, $150-200 for installation.
That's a good start, but there is much more you can do to your engine. You can port and polish the head, get a 3 or 5 angle valve grind, port and polish the stock intake manifold, port match the intake and exhaust to the head, etc, etc. but after you do the boltons it starts to get more expensive. Remember fixing up a car takes a lot of money..I always tell people if they are on a limited budget, then leave the car stock performance wise and do cosmetic mods only. Speed costs money, now how fast do you want to go?? Fixing up cars is a hobby, a very expensive hobby..if you can't afford to do it right, you should get a cheaper hobby..like a pet rock garden.
