why are 240's so unreliable?

sorry about posting this, but the 240 reliability scale for me is almost an exact 1.2 on a scale of 10.
everything breaks, malfunctions, cracks, falls apart, etc.
im seriously thinking of selling my car. i cant afford something i have to dump $200 into every month.
anyone know how the 240 handles reliability with aftermarket parts? that is the only way i can keep my car. with everything done to it i almost have a brand new car (with parts) but im not sure how long that is going to last.

well lets see, thats the chances you have to take by buyin a used car. esp one that is 14 years old. i know plenty of people who have single cam motors who have over 200K on the odometer and still running. of course things start to break over 14 years of winter driving, drivin in the rain. and just plain ol beatin the hell out of hte car. you don't think that rust will form underneth the car after 14 years? come on~

I know exactly what you mean. I love my car, its fun to drive, looks beautiful, etc. But almost everything I've done to my car aftermarket wise was because something stock broke on it.
Example
Needed new tires so I got new tires and wheels
Exhaust was rusted so I bought a new exhaust and header
Cat was rattling so I got a test pipe
Clutch was slipping so I got a new clutch and flywheel
Brakes grinded so I just put new brakes on
Now I need shocks bad so I'm going to have to buy new shocks and while I'm at it I might as well buy coilovers too.
realize that my car only has 63,000 miles on it.
I have a for sale sign on my car right now, if I sell it, I'm going to buy something reliable...

how can you say 240's are unreliable just because you have problems? I have a '90 plymouth laser and I've spent more on it fixing it than I paid for it and I've owned it for like 14 months, and I haven't even put anything performance on it, and I know a guy that I get cheap parts for, plus I do all the work myself, now don't complain about not being reliable, I'll trade you any day :iceslolan

seems to me everything you've replaced on your car is probably because the last guy didn't take care of it. But everything you replaced on your car is stuff that always gets used. So don't say unreliable. Rx-7's aren't any more reliable. later,

at least dayna feels me
my car has 73000 mi on it. i put almost double money into what i paid for it. and i paid a lot for mine (over 4000)....
exhaust, cat, pulley, radiator, fan, struts & springs. that right there is over 2200.
shit. THATS A LOTTA MONEY.....
it feels something goes wrong every two weeks. i love it, but this sucks.

maybe you don't take care of it as good as you could? not saying anything against you just suggesting that. or the person that had it before you didn't change the oil enough, or something. it could be a number of reasons but you can't say nissan makes unreliable cars because they do make some of the best, and 240's are more reliable than 2nd gen rx-7's dayna so hopefull your talking 93+

Well if you want a reliable car that your planning on putting no money into, then maybe a sports car isn't the ideal car for you, perhaps an Escort? or maybe a Focus? i hear they aren't as maintenance inclined as would be a sports car. 2200 isn't a drop in the bucket of what people put into these cars. I've invested at least 5000 into mine. Again, maybe you should look into family sedans. :sunglasse

A.) I forgot to say at 50,000 my clutch fan stopped working so at idle my car would overheat. So I bought an electric fan.
B.) I looked at the carfax report on my car before I bought it, I am the 4th or 5th (cant remember) owner, the car was originally from TX, and only had 40,000 miles. And it was under $7,500 so I bought it anyway.
C.) Obviously stuff I've replaced is stuff that always gets used otherwise it wouldnt be there :biggrin2: BUT, a clutch fan, clutch, shocks, and exhaust should not have gone bad with under 60,000 miles on them.
D.) My engine is making a crazy sound now that I have never heard before.
E.) AssassinSR you dont know who I am so you cannot tell me RX-7's are not more reliable. I've owned over 20 RX-7's many with over 150,000 miles on them, completly stock. The only way my 240 will last that long is with a ton of money.
F.) I'm not saying Nissans dont make unreliable cars at all, I love Nissans and talked both my parents into buying them. Maybe I just got a lemon or the many owners before me didnt take good care of her, but I know I take extremly good care of her.
G.) "and 240's are more reliable than 2nd gen rx-7's dayna so hopefull your talking 93+" Your on crack. 2nd gens are alot more reliable than 3rd gens. N/A rotarys last way over 180,000 miles with good care, a TII engine will last about 140-150,000 miles with good care, but a 13B-REW will only last about 75-80,000 miles before it goes.
H.) You are an idoit- oh wait, I'm not suppose to call people that anymore on here, their feelings get hurt. ANYWAY, just because its a "sports car" doesnt mean it cant be reliable.

Not saying that there are no reliable sports cars, but then again with cars that are older comes maintenance. (i.e. replacing tires, exhaust, shocks, struts, occasionaly changing the oil, so on and so forth.) Maybe you drive it hard, or preventive maintenance isn't being done, i'm not attacking you, i simply stated that if you want reliability, and no work, then go for a sedan. However, on a serious note, sometimes the engines that are in the 240 sx, people have replaced, with parts from japan, or performance parts that are from japan. Either way, i'm in japan, and i have to tell you alot of people make the mistake of replacing american (import)car parts with japanese parts. One distinct difference between the two is that japanese parts are not meant to drive at a constant speed higher than 80 kph which is roughly between 50-60 MPH. So if on a freeway doing 70-80 MPH, that is like running that part at a constant speed of 120 or kph. which is overusing it, causing it to obviously break down quicker. This might or might not be your problem, but i have encountered it in the past. later man:sunglasse

Hey maybe your cars were made on Fridays? Or Mondays? You know, Fridays when everyone wants to go home for the weekend, and don't care about the quality? And Mondays when everyone hates work and might still be hungover...
LOL j/k guys... for the most part, I'd say that Nissans are reliable, but there's just some out there that are just have a lot of demons...
Like my 97 4Runner, started having problems with the tranny at 50k miles or so, and it's auto... the leather is ripping and cracking, despite consumate care, etc. etc... it's a Friday SUV i think

every car has a margin of reliability as dayna said (gen2 rx7's more so than gen3)
but ever so often, a car steps outside the margin, and this is not uncommon.. especially for mechanical parts and electronic parts..
take this into consideration...
there was a dude with a 95 integra gsr.. and his 1.8 always bogged.. it was a lemon.. no two ways about it..
it was stock.. and it still bogged. he finally gave up and bought a new civic... a couple of months down the road.. someone with the same problem, on the EXACT same TYPE of integra went into the same shop... same options and all.. and amazingly.. the vin numbers were only 60 cars apart... so.. they called some places.. called honda.. and actually found out that about 120 of these cars were pure lemon juicers..
this could have happened for hundreds of reasons.. but most likely this:
during the manufacturing of the engine, everything was put together perfectly and to spec.. but the manufacturer of .. say... the camshafts.. made the cut on their cam shafts wrong... 120... on 120 different cam shafts.. this in turn, would make 120 cars bog if they were assembled to spec.
and something that is true with all 80's + jap cars is that they have a WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE Reliability margin.. there is no doubt in my mind that one car can perform way better than someones expectations in the long run.. and some wont make it at all....
just something to consider before u get the notion that all the cars of the same model are alike. :bigthumb:

Get this crap about my crazy car:
Ok I go to change my breaks, just got my new beautiful Hawk HPS pads in. Take the front tire off, caliper, etc., go to put the pad in and its the wrong freaking pad! So I think they sent me the wrong parts, I have absolutly no brakes so I have to go down to advanced auto and buy their POS wearevers to get me by for another week before Hawk can ship the right ones.
I go to put the wearevers in and they are the same ones as the Hawks!!
So I go back to advanced auto, bring my stock pads and you know which ones work? Pads to a '96 240 withOUT ABS!!! I have ABS!
At least the rear ones were right.

No speed limit huh? hmm. That's not an accurate statement. The normal highway speed limit is around 60kph. Only thing above that out here is expressways (toll roads) that enable you to go an amazingly fast 80kph. . so please before you comment on stuff you are completely uneducated about, take the time to research.

let's stop the shit-throwing in here, hmm? thanks.
as for the reliability, i've just come to expect it. that's what you'll get when you buy an older car, no matter how many miles it has on it. it's just something you have to expect! some cars will need more repairs in a smaller frame of time, for instance if the previous owner replaced everything all at once then naturally it'll all wear out around the same time too, and some will just need a new part every once in a while, and you won't be able to go a month without replacing something. it's the same with new cars too, although on an obviousley smaller scale.
nothing compares to my damn Pontiac. i've had the fucking thing for 5 months now, and i've had 4 flats, new muffler, new exhaust pipe, new windshield, replaced the trunk latch twice, replaced the heater blower motor, had the TCC Solenoid in the transmission repaired (car stalled every time it came to a stop), plus i have to replace the power steering fluid every week because there's a leak in the system somewhere. oh yeah, and there's a new hole already in my fairly-new exhaust pipe leading up to the muffler, making my car sound like a Camaro. i'm not fixing anything more though. the car is going to my friend for $150 when i buy my 240SX.

dayna's is a 95.... that isnt much of an older car. 7 years? it should have still held up better.
at least they are making cars better nowadays, too bad we'll have to wait 20 years to see how long they will last.
speak of the devil, i just checked my crankshaft pulley, and it's leaking oil. that's why there was oil that was spitting up onto my roof and all over the engine bay. so my underdrive pulley that's in the mail will now be classified under "maintenance" instead of "upgrade". that's good i got it.
240s suck :thefinger WHY DO WE LOVE THEM SO MUCH?? im just addicted to how they look and run when everything is working right. they are just too cool.

you guys have nothing compared to me, rear right spring broken, left front ball joint shot, NO power steering, and can take turns just fine btw, leaky clutch, rust out the wazoo, body damage, leaky exhaust, wiring problems like you wouldnt believe. man. but nismo, most of the problems you have will happen to just about any car that old, unless you maintain it perfectly. honestly, a car wont be in mint condition if you drive it everyday in the salt, rain, snow, etc. expect maintence problems.
and the whole thing about jap parts lasting longer, its becuz of engineering, no speed limit wont make your car last longer, it would shorten its life.
i see that you have over 2k posts, i think you would know a bit more about maintence and jap cars than me. admit it, jap has more technology when it comes to most things than anyone else in the world.

well i bought a 93 240 coupe with 82k on it in september...ka24de auto tranny.....had it for 2-3 months....the KA24de blew up...i never diagnosed it i just sent it to the shop that was doing my engine becuase it had to go there anyway...the KA did have a fresh coat of silicone on the valve cover seal and the valve cover looked brand new...the hole engine bay did...i remember pulling onto the road....the car woulent go past 60 i herd alota rattling n the BLAM! n the car woulent start cranked no compreshion ect....well anyway...since the SR swap the car picked up 10k miles i dailey drive it....and they only problem i had with it was....brakes tires and my intercooler pipe blew off when i did one of my poor atempts at a drift....i will be needing a clutch soon it is a 5-speed now btw. but i can't say i've felt any reliability issues with my car...tho i think one strut might be bad.... i got tanabe's comin so im not worried...this KA problem i had makes me wonder how you KA folk get HP's outa them without blowin em...my car was totaly stock till i put a sr in it...o well...i talk to much

My 91 240 has close to 240,000 miles now and it runs like a champ, with a few aftermarket parts too (ka)! the only real problem ive ever had is that its and auto and those trannys suck and replaced a water pump and radiator (no biggie), other than that nothing. mabye im lucky but also changed oil every 3 and such so... i say their quite reliable especially for such old cars
