I like the way you have gone for the non-standard shots, the ones that also show the unique aspects of some of the cars and the details that set apart the cars from the rest

This may be a really stupid comment since I'm not an expert on the McLaren F1 cars...but weren't most Gulf liveried cars a very light blue color? Why is it different on the McLaren?

I don't think it is a stupid question. I certainly don't recall an answer. The final version of the Gulf livery on the 1997 cars did make use of something closer to the more traditional Robin's Egg Blue we see on most Gulf-liveried cars.

I will see if Andy Blackmore recalls the answer to your question as he was around and involved in livery design when the original Gulf McLarens were made.

There's one element of the photo which could allow you to easily rule out #10R and #12R.

Yes it's staring me in the face the 1995 Wiper Position, I'm leaning towards 05R but can't explain why?

Peloton, a quick question about 072: Did you sit in it? The reason I ask is, out of curiosity, can one actually see well to drive when the sun hits that dashboard? :eek7: Was reading a thread on FChat that mentioned Ferrari no longer does light-coloured dashes on U.S.-bound cars because of reflection issues. So, when I looked at the picts of 072 again, it made me wonder...

I wasn't offered that opportunity and would never ask someone for the chance who I did not know very well, so no.

I'm sure it can pose some challenges in certain light conditions where a more muted color would be preferable. As with pretty much everything there are compromises - certainly style and a cohesive flow to the look of the interior took precedence here.

Ray did drive that car at one point during the Tour so perhaps he'll have a better answer for you.

Colours of Gulf Mclaren race cars

the answer is simple. When Gulf approached me in 1994 - October - to sponsor my car, their creative dept came up with a colour scheme that came from the Porsche of the previous year. at the end of 1995 i told them the colour was too recessive so we brightened it up hence the 1996 colour. at the end of 1996 the Gulf sponsorship was inadequate and Ron Dennis lent me the 1997 car - 025R - to race as I had won the championship. He also facilitated Ueno at Suzuka, Marlboro in Zuhai and for 1997 Davidoff. So he decided Mclaren would design the paint job and they reverted to pale blue to facilitate Davidoff which was brown.

It must be quite fantastic to drive the car today which you had good tuff races in 1996 and won the Championship. I just can imagine the feelings when siting back behind it's steering wheel today. :smokin:

Afraid I prefer the 1995 scheme, much less garish, more clssy in my eyes.
Still any Gulf McLaren still wearing it's original livery muct be aplauded.
I am corrct in believing than none still wear the 1995 livery am I?

I knew about the first two, 08R I was not sure about but thouight it was an LM look alike, also first 2 locations are known but as to the location of 08R again a very grey area to me.

I think the disappointment relates to the fact that many people are confused into believing they've seen an F1 LM when they spot an orange GTR. I used to feel this way too but if someone doesn't love the livery the car was raced in there can be no better choice I think.

After seeing #07R in Italy all I can say is that it looked FANTASTIC! I think quiqui has a great photo to share of it soon.
