ci5ic

Yes, they'll be fiberglass, but its not for subs. It's for my 6.5" two-way rear-fill speakers.

Here's the one that I've been working on for my subs... Started it last year, but never finished it...

That is some of the coolest work I have ever seen. it would be great to do a little how to on your fiberglass work. I would like to get into creating a fiberglass sub box for the hatch but I have never worked with the stuff before.
Ohh and what are are your plans for your stock speaker holders?
Are you looking to sell them?

Reminds me of that show car alpine built out of that 2002 Civic SI. Man.. that car was crazy, one seater and everything, w/ enough ICE to make you go deaf from just turning it on. I think a magazine did a article about it, said it was estimated to be about $250,000.

The Alpine website also has a good article on that car.

Thats just what i was going to say, go to Alpine's website, and they got how to's for both those cars ( CIVIC si & RSX ) Great info for both cars. And i got that mag. you were talkin bout, perdy crazy. That stuff isnt really that hard, its jus no one likes projects that require time, patience, and thinking :p Im doing my Trunk show car like, making my custom boxes right now too. Out of Cardboard, and my dad owns a woodshop for cabinents w/his friend, and they got all the extra wood i could need. The real wood you use for boxes, i made the sub box , speaker boxes for trunk, and now workin on a box that goes into the spare wheel well for my Air ride kit, whatever its going to be ( air bag, strut, etc ) But the box will be universal for either of em' , so i jus gotta get that done, then im makin peices that fit in for the fiberglass molds, gonna "show" it up ! cant wait, just need the time ;)

i think just about EVERY car magazine had some sort of feature regarding that crazy ass Alpine civic Si.... everything from one little paragraph blurb to full color 6 page features... it was everywhere.

very nice fiberglass work! I can't wait to see them installed.

my LX didn't come with rear speakers either, so I just built my own enclosures for them so that I could fit my bigass eXcelons back there... damn things are almsot 4" thick, and you only can mount a speaker under 3" deep in the stock location to keep from hitting the torsion bars. i used MDF... just the two pieces I used are enough to keep the rear deck from rattling from my sub.

i am considering doing a custom rear deck with fiberglass and put in some components and angle the speakers for better imaging... that is if I ever get time.

EDIT: I will not be buying a 2003 Civic Si. Stupid college. So I will be keeping my 4G4D!

this fiberglass stuff looks awesome!!! i want to know how that stuff works! do you just make the mold, put the cloth on, then put that epoxy stuff on it? i am looking for kits and stuff, where can i find fiberglass stuff? seriously, the possibilities with that stuff are endless! hook me up with some info if you have the time!

i think it might have been an option then ... cause my friends 91 dx 4 door the rear deck is flat and there is also no place for the speakers ... so we are gonna go get the right deck from the junkyard one of these days ... and then once we figure out how to take out the old deck I will know how to take mine out and I can tint my back window .... it cant possibly be that hard to tint the window in a 4th gen ... theres hardly even a curve!

That is an awesome design! My 240Z and 280ZX's weren't designed for rear speakers (unless you count the ones directly behind the seats in the early ZX's, which you can't hear when the seat it extended all the way, and mutes the sound). You just gave me the idea to build my own boxes and position them behind the rear strut towers. Only question is . . . where do you purchase the fiberglass materials?

ci5ic
06-02-2003, 01:34 AM
Fiberglass material can be purchased several places...

Some hardware stores stock the materials, and most boat-shops carry it (for fixing fiberglass boat hulls). I go to the KC Auto Paint supply store in town, and it's the cheapest there. shouldn't be hard to find.

I'm still pretty new at the fiberglass, but figuring it out as I go along.

Here's some links that I found to be very usefull:
http://www.diymobilesound.com/tutorials/fiberglass_kickpanels.htm
http://www.rtol.net/scornell/2002NI.htm
Badass Sub-tub fiberglass page (I think the link is dead though):
http://members.iinet.net.au/~nismo/subs.html
http://www.diysubwoofers.org/audiolinks.htm

You can order stuff online from here:
http://www.tapplastics.com/fiberglass/index.html

Basically, my approach to the process is to build a wood frame, and stretch Lycra (a.k.a. Spandex) over the frame to get a natural basic shape, and staple it to the frame. Most sites tell you to use fleece material (like sweatshirt fabric), but I found that lycra is much stretchier and easier to work with. Then you coat the lycra with fiberglass resin, which you have to mix with a hardener using a paint-brush. Once it has hardened, you re-inforce it with several layers of fiberglass cloth or matting. The cloth is just woven strands of fiberglass, and the matting is much thicker, it's matted strands of fiberglass. You saturate the cloth or matting with fiberglass resin and lay it on the surface. Once you've built up several layers (for these speaker pods, I'll probably only use 2 or 3 layers of fiberglass cloth, for a sub enclosure, you'd probably want 7 or more layers), you let it harden, and then apply Bondo or some similar filler material and sand it smooth... Lots and lots of sanding until you get the shape you're after. If you are going to apply carpeting to the object, you don't have to sand too much, but if you use a vinyl cover, you have to make sure the surface is really smooth because imperfections will show through the vinyl. If you are going to paint it, you REALLY have to sand it smooth...

That's really about it... Fiberglass resin is some pretty noxious stuff, so of course make sure to use it in well ventilated areas, and use rubber gloves to keep it off of your skin... It sticks to EVERYTHING, so if you're fiberglassing inside your car, make sure to cover anything you don't want to get resin on. If you spill some resin, Acetone will help clean it up.

Also, the chemical reaction of the hardener and resin creates heat, and can burn stuff. I had a mixing cup with the resin in it catch fire once, so be carefull with it.

It's kindof difficult to work with, especially when the resin starts to harden when you're trying to use it, but once you get the hang of it, there's so many things you can do with it.

Hope that helps someone...

Thanks for sharing that with me, Mike! I'm anxious to see how yours turn out. One of the guys in our Z Club chopped the top of of his 240Z and created a fiberglass mold over styro to give it the Ferrari look -- G-nose and all. Really cool! If I can master the speaker box, watch out! :D

Added fiberglass/resin... 2 layers. Looks sketchy as hell, but should look good after bondo/sanding

Applied Bondo (actualy not Bondo, but a similar Marine filler material)... now for the sanding...

The one on the right is a little bit lighter because I didn't use the right amount of hardener, so I hope it still cures properly... ?

If you plan on putting any kind of good speaker on the rear deck (for the 4g4d owners) and plan on running some power to it, I recommend investing in some dynamat (just the small speaker kit), because that rear deck flexes a LOT under little to no power... makes for bad sound and whatnot. My subwoofer generates so much pressure with the trunk closed that it will distort the cones on my 6.5" coaxials on the rear deck. Crazy.

My friend had that problem, and just used Speaker baffles. They are like 8 bucks at crutchfield.com, here is the link and a pic of what it looks like: http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-aNqgu385Edp/ProdView.asp?a=&s=0&cc=01&g=762&id=essential_info&i=237XT65

Sanding by hand at this point... I've seen some 3D sanders that would probably work great for this, but since I'm unemployed, I can't justify the expense. That's alright though, with all this extra time on my hands it keeps me busy, and when I finally do finish them, it'll be a greater satisfaction... I figure I've got another 2 hours to go on the one, and then I get to start sanding the other one :D

Oh, and welcome to the forum. Despite the fact that you don't own a 4th generation civic (or 2nd gen. CRX), I think you'll find that most everybody here is a decent person, and we have alot of fun.
