Hi there,
I have posted a few times in the diecast model forums on this site and I have just spent a day and a half reading through the McLaren F1 forum. What a great source of information you guys are and I would like to thank you for all the time you have put into your respective posts.
My question is this. A few weeks ago on one of the diecast forums there was a post from a member who had heard of an event taking place in France sometime this year where the organisers were trying to get together as many McLaren F1's as they could. The member was unsure the location and only had sketchy details. I would like to know if you guys know anymore about this event as I would love to make the trip from the UK.
Regards
Tim Dunlop

Hey, sign me up! Sounds like an awesome idea, but I can't say that I have heard of it before.
I was hoping that if I ever met Jay Leno and got to see his McLaren, I could try to convince him to arrange something like that here in the US... It's a rather self-serving request though... :D

I am not aware of any organized event, but I will do some checkin. I will post what I find. If there is something going on out there, most certainly, I will be able to gain the details.

Hi there,
I have just read the following from the guy that first told me about the McLaren F1 gathering.
"Hi all,
A quick update on the reunion. My information says that it will take place in France on the week begining 15/09/03. The cars will meet in Paris and then move onto Bordeaux before arriving at Le Mans on the Friday. If it goes ahead it wil fit in really well with me as I will be at the 6hr race at Spa so will be able to nip across on my way home.
All this is still subject to conformation and will only go ahead if all the owners who have promised to be there actually sign up.
More information as I get it......
Cheers
D"
Anyone else heard anymore.

Hi there,
Yes I am the same Tim Dunlop. I don't use E-Bay anymore as it seems to be silly season on there at the moment, people bid on the items you are selling and then never pay for them.
I sell most of my models via my website www.mad4models.com although you won't find any McLaren's F1 on there as they are now out of production and appreciating in value by the day.

Ok, I found some more information on this McLaren gathering in France. Bear with me though, as I have had to use a web based translator in order to present the info in as close to English as possible:
Supercar Rally seems to make followers. For proof "McLaren F1 Tour" organized by Peter Car to celebrate the 10 years of this car entered the legend a few months only after its appearance in competition. It will have taken 4 years for Gordon Murray to design this car whose first road specimens will be delivered to the customers in 1994. F1 GTR made its first appearance in competition in February 1995 at the time of the test of Sherry of supreme Championship BPR. Consécration in June of the same year, with the absolute victory at the 24 Hours of Mans. The beginning of a long series. From the 16 to September 19 next, a score of owners come from the 4 corners of planet, will parcouront on board their machine, nearly 700 kms on the roads of France. Departure of Bordeaux, stages with Brantôme (Périgord) and Montbazon, before the arrival on the straight line of Hunaudières. Not without to have made a hook by the Farmhouse of the Field, history to return visit to his/her ainée sister to the similar destiny, Ferrari GTO.
Info taken from here (http://perso.club-internet.fr/jmugnier/Actualit%E9s%20Retro.htm) and dated 4/13/2003.
And additionally, I found some info confirming the bits and pieces from above in English:
McLaren F1 Tour
Last year we saw the owners of GTO Ferraris progress through Europe on a tour that included Champagne houses, fine dining, Burgundian feasts and other bacchanalia in a celebration of their privileged status as the owners of such rare and valuable cars. This year it is the turn of McLaren F1 owners to celebrate their good fortune and pay tribute to a car that really was a revelation ten years ago. Both could be said to be the greatest GT cars of their time. Predictably, the F1 owners will start in a prestigious Bordelaise vineyard and enjoy chateaux hospitality throughout their 700km, three-day tour. They will call in at Mas du Clos and the museum there, and will take some time out for laps on the undulating circuit. The finale will take place on the Le Mans Bugatti circuit in homage to the McLaren F1 GTR’s stunning victory at Le Mans in 1995. Dates for this tour are 16-19 September.
Taken from here (http://www.historicmotorracingnews.com/magazine/articles/2003/may/bits/upcomingevents.htm).
Seems like I need to mark my calendar for Sept and start saving for my trip to France, ehh... :D
If anyone knows more about this or is planning to go themselves, please let me know as I'm very interested in attending. It could be a once in a lifetime opportunity the way I see it.

Hi,
The premiere issue of Octane magazine is definately one to pick up for everyone. Page 12 (of theUS edition at least; this is an English magazine) has a news item on this very tour. I will type it out for everyone:
"At least 20 McLaren F1s are expected to take part in a tour through France, to celebrate their tenth anniversary.... Ten years on, F1 owners will celebrate by driving 700km along scenic French secondary roads, starting in Bordeaux. There will be stops in Brantome and in Monbazon, near Tours, before the tour finishes at Le Mans on the famous Hunaudueres straight. For information on the McLaren tour call Peter Auto on +33 (0)1 42 59 73 40, or email [email protected]"
ALSO, Jay Leno is interviewed about his collection. It doesn't mention his F1 much except to say it is in his "Top Ten" of best cars out of the quoted 80 in his collection. To quote from the article: "I love it. The gauges go to dead centre and stay there. They have opened a McLaren service centre in LA because there are seven or eight on the West Coast now. Ralph Lauren's got one."
ALSO, on the last page is an interview with Gordon Murray. To sum, his work on the MB SLR car is all but done and now he is back to thinking about new projects.... "I still haven't quite got my head around the idea that I've got most of the day to get into new ideas. Fairly soon it will turn into new cars anyway. I'm a performance car enthusiast, and I still haven't found one performance regulation for road cars... If you want to dream something up, you can have it."
If you still want to pick up the premiere issue (July 03) I found mine at Barnes & Noble.

Peloton, others,
I believe the event is by invitation only. Are you planning on crashing it? That's pretty gutsy. What if you go all the way to France and are turned away at the door. I don't think the cars will be sitting outside if you are hoping to grab some pictures. You could probably get some pics if you catch them on the road. But it's a long way to travel for an opportunity you may not get.
I am hoping some magazines will cover it. I have talked to 3 owners I know. None of them is interested in going. :(
Rgds,
Faisal.

I wouldn't try to crash it - that's not my style. Much like the Supercar Rally though, there will be places along the route which would most certainly provide an opportunity to see the cars.
I mean we all know that the McLaren F1 is no fuel miser so I would expect lots of stops for gas along the way. ;)
Now I just need to find the fastest rental car in all of France - any suggestions?? :D

This sounds like an interesting event. I don't understand the point of a tour because its the 10 year anniversary. They should just have a party or something.

It's about a car. Cars...driving...they're sort of related, you know. There will be partying as well. But I think the high-speed convoys would be the most appealing part.

Sorry to dig this up, but there's a bit of new information:
The McLaren F1 Tour, 9/16-19/03 has been postponed due to lack of entries. Peter Auto, the tour’s organizer, hopes to put on the event in 2004/2005 for the 10th anniversary of the McLaren F1 victory in Le Mans. +33 1.42.59.73.40, [email protected]
So I guess they will try again in a few years. Maybe McLaren themselves could even be roped in as a participant as I'm certain they would like to celebrate that victory once again on the anniversary. I can't think of a better way than a huge F1 gathering similar to what was held at the factory when the original F1 GTR prototype was unveiled. (see below)
http://a4.cpimg.com/image/BA/BB/24813754-7f25-020000E0-.jpg
Funny thing though - I could swear that gerd said he'd received an invitation to one of the stops (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=120749). Maybe he was the only one there at this original event - left standing on the corner maybe??

You can rent Ferraris in France, Germany, or TVRs in England. Those should keep up!
My advice for renting cars on the continent is to rent from EuroCar, as Avis and Hertz stopped doing performance cars whilst i was working over there in 2000. Aside from Eurocar in Germany, I never saw "any of them" rent performance cars in either Italy, Netherlands, or France.. 450DM (150STG or $250USD approx.) per day used to get a non-turbo 911, S4, SAAB turbo, or AMG merc in either Munich or Berlin. I suppose the question is whether they still rent performance cars now in 2003?
A friend who is a Diablo owner in HK always rents Ferrari's from these people whilst in the UK, and recommendeds their customer service and outlook.. Believe it used to cost him between $500-700 daily rate for a F360? I rented an M3 the last time I was over, and it was a trouble free experience..
http://www.coastal-carhire.co.uk/luxury_carhire/ferrari_rental.htm
Can any of you provide equivalent rental info on the USA market for Vipers, Mustangs, Vette's etc?? For either NY, FL, or within 1/4 mile of Laguna Seca? :->

I find a Motorsport news website with confirmation from the organizer of the event that it has been postponed due to lack of participation and you respond with "No, it happened, trust me". I just find it extremely hard to believe that what you are saying is true.
No photos have surfaced and no reports have been printed anywhere confirming what you claim - at least that I have seen. The one report that was printed says very clearly that it didn't happen. If you want to make a statement like that in the face of contradicting evidence, we're certainly going to need something more substantial. Your track record on providing good information here isn't all that great. In fact, I'd say your track record shows that you do more withholding of good info than anyone else.
It doesn't make me hate you or anything, but it does make me question your point in being here. How many "Help on this or that" threads have you posted in this forum? It's supposed to be a give-and-take around here - at least I think that is the way that everyone else sees it.
EDIT: Incidentally - initially I didn't provide a direct link to my source because it's a cached page I found while searching Google. Here it is for those who might be interested. You will need to Cut & Paste the link though:

Mini, Peloton,
Lets be friends here. Even I have had a good laugh now and then with what is said back and forth at no one's expense. The edit thing is quite humerous.
Knowledge is nothing without someone to share it with. Likewise, there is something to be said about tenacity and the enthusiasm of the chase. Knowledge usually comes at a price, if nothing else, time. There is a very good resource of information within this forum. If you don't immediately see the fact you are looking, more than likely, it is somewhere amongst the listings. :nutkick:
