Won't lock into gear

I have a 1998 Achieva that I just bought in November. Suddenly this morning when I left it would not 'lock' into drive or park. It goes into gear but the button on the shifter doesn't pop back out and because it won't lock I cannot turn the key all the way off or get it out.

Look behind the shifter handle theres a small clips it comes out with a small screwdriver after its out the shifter handle comes off. youl see what going on once its off
