97 lumina 3.1 fuel pump

A friend of mine has a 97 lumina 3.1, of wich has been giving him problems. his mechanic told him he needs a new fuel pump. Is it possible to replace the pump alone, or do you have to change the entire sending unit?

Re: 97 lumina 3.1 fuel pump

You have to replace the whole thing and get a Delphi pump from the dealer or your nearest Carquest auto parts store if you want to it once.Airtex and Carter fuel pumps are two brands to stay away from due to lots of failures. Also change the fuel filter, the old one is full of dirt and trash that will ruin the new fuel pump

You can replace just the pump, but if you are having issues w/gauge is best to replace the whole unit. Bosch makes an excellent unit also.

Re: 97 lumina 3.1 fuel pump

Only fuel pump brand I know that works for GMs is Delphi.Only had one Delphi fail so far.All Bosch makes is junk,to their fuel injection systems to their power tools. My father does not trust anything made by Bosch starting with a circular saw years ago made by Bosch.Bosch is company that will screw up anything they buy out and not worth working for.My local Snap On Dealer knows someone that worked at Bosch and said Bosch is not worth working for.You cannot get the just the pump,it is a cartridge type fuel pump and I have seen one.Replace the whole thing since GMs do have problems with sending units
