What the hell is a core charge?

I was looking to buy a Gude head package from Mantary Motorsports usa.com and there is a core charge of 500 dollars on like the head package and then it says the regular price. On throttle bodies it says 250 then the regular price of 275. What is a core charge??????

If you send back the part you are replacing then they usually refund you the core charge. Havnt you ever had to replace a battery before?

Who pays core charges on batteries?

They usually have them on calipers, alternators, things of that nature. Because what they are basically selling you is a remanufactured part, and to keep the prices low, you need to bring them a "rebuildable" replacement part.

They charge core down here on batteries. Dunno maybe its just a state thing. And I think they also recycle batteries and use certian parts of them again.

Batteries from k mart, walmart,etc... they have a core charge...that way they get a rebuildable core to sell to the next guy...batteries have lead in them that they recycle....

The place where I am having my car fixed diagnosed the problem as a failed electronic computer module. It is a very expensive part and I asked if I could have the old part back. The owner/technician/mechanic told me that I will have to pay a core charge if I want the old part back, but if the seller get the old part then I will not have to pay the core charge which will be deducted from the regular price of the part.

Since I will not know whether the electronic module is replaced or just kept as is, my concern is that I really do not know whether my problem is a simple one that will only cost me 1/10th of the estimate of replacing the electronic module which couldn't really have a problem with it.
