Hi Guys,
I need a little help. I pick up a 1995 Lumina (4 door) 3.1 with a vin #8 of "M" for the motor. The motor is blown and I am looking for for another one. Can someone please tell me or direct me as to whatelse will match up and go into this car? Would a Lunina Van with a 3.1 match up to it? |

Re: Engine crossmatch for a 95 Lumina with a 3.1
Starting in '94, the 3.1 was modified.. .. Here's a quote:
" The 3.1 L V6 was redesigned and gained 20 hp for a total of 160 hp. This 3.1 was essentially an entirely different engine being that it has almost nothing in common with the previous version . The new 3.1, (labeled 3100) features different heads, intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, sequential fuel injection, and many other items . The new version later became known for lower intake manifold gasket failures. " However the Lumina Van kept using the old 3.1 until it was replaced by the 3.4 in '96.

Re: Engine crossmatch for a 95 Lumina with a 3.1
The Lumina Vans used a throttle body injected version of the 3.1 that also has a distributor, so it is not compatable with your car. Since your car is a 95, you need to determine if it has roller rocker arms or ball/pivot rocker arms and whether it has OBD-I or OBD-II diagnostics (gotta love changeover model years). If it has ball/pivot rockers, the only engines compatible are 93-95 Vin-M 3100's with that rocker design. If it has roller rockers, you could use a newer Vin-M engine, but if your car is OBD-I, you'll need to change most of the sensors and retain your upper plenum and throttle body. If your car has OBD-II, then any Vin-M up to 99 should work with minimum changes.
