98 STS rear shock issue

A friend of mine bought a 98 Seville STS about 2 months ago. The ride was unlike any Caddy i've ever been in. So i checked out the struts and shocks. The air ride system had been cut and the struts and shocks replaced with regular parts. The front was no big deal to replace the strut with the same type that was already on there. The rear is where I have my problem. The shock (once again no air ride) has been replaced with a truck looking shock. It's 26" and has a spring around it. When I tried to find a replacement I couldnt match the shock. The OEM parts are like $700 a peice so we wont be using those. What I need to know is what vehicle use a 26" shock fully extended that will bolt on with only minor modifications. The shock will have to have the 2 bolt holes on the bottom drilled out to ovals to bolt up safley. The top should have a 3" stud.

This is the third Caddy that has been brought to me that has been butchered. Some people should never have a Caddy and others should never work on them. They dont deserve the quality of a Cadillac.

I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

Re: 98 STS rear shock issue

There are several companies that make those passive suspension parts for Cadillacs now. Check with Boston Suspension or Arnott Industries. I think there are a few others as well that will sell the shocks you need for a smoother ride.

Re: 98 STS rear shock issue

Thanks cause none of my customers want to pay $700 for a single strut anyway.

Re: 98 STS rear shock issue

I agree! Especially on a car that old! GM is starting to make some passive struts for Cadillacs now. I know they now make them for my 1994 Deville (around $300 for the pair), but I don't know about the later Sevilles.
