Re: Best AC Cobra 427 kit?

In my opion, Revell is the best. Revell has offered SC and street versions in the past. I think the current offering is an SC. The only issue I had with the street version when I built it a few years back was that it came with side exhausts. A lot of street cobras did not use the side exhaust, so I converted mine.

Studio 27 did offer a fret for the Cobra.

I don't know if it's still available. It doesn't show up in Hobby Link Japan's listing. I think it was moade for the Fujimi kit, but it works on the Revell.

Re: Best AC Cobra 427 kit?

An S/C is a street version. SC= Street Competition. A true "street" Cobra would have no lip on the rear wheel opening, no hood scoop, no fender mounted quick fill gas cap, no roll bar, and no oil cooler chin bump. Most also had the early style rectangular tail lights as used on the 289 cars. The S/C cars used the stacked round tail lights. S/C's were comp cars that didn't sell and had street equipment added to make them legal. You are correct that street Cobras did not have side exhaust, S/C and comp cars did. They also had different dash layouts between street and S/c-comp cars. If someone were to do a true street Cobra, it would be interesting.

Most full size replica kits model the S/C, most people have never seen a true street 427 Cobra. Kirkham makes a replica in Aluminum of both the street and S/C versions.

S/C:

Re: Best AC Cobra 427 kit?

Thanks thats graeat info. I think I want to build the S/C version, but wich Revell kit got both a full window and the white racing stripes decals to build as the well known "cobolt blue" Cobra?

Btw: I would also like to build a 289 Cobra to place beside the 427, but I only see AMT kits on eBay. Is the bodyshape on these AMT kits any good/real?

Re: Best AC Cobra 427 kit?

Revell AGs Baldwin motion kit will give you the best S/C to build, the trickiest part of the kit is getting the windshield on properly. It comes with a tonneu cover and a hardtop cover aswell as the rollbar. The it has both Cobra dashes for street and S/C models. I do think you will not be able to find a kit with the white decals, which is for the best you should mask them and paint them yourself.

I say get the above mentioned kit, it has everything you will need however you will need to put some rear tires on it, it comes with slicks on the back.

I have the kit lying around in pieces so if you want to see it with a 289 or anything like that PM me and I'll see what I can do.

Re: Best AC Cobra 427 kit?

I just built the Revell Cobra, the box with the blue one and the green one on the box art. It comes with nice Cartograf decals which has the stripes on it. It really is one of Revells nicer kits.
Here is my build of it. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=670471

Re: Best AC Cobra 427 kit?

That one looked nice Mike.

This is basicly very close to what I want to build:

So If I have got things right: I order the new Revell Cobra kit (RMX852828) wich should supply me with the correct bodyshape, window frame and white stripe decals. But I need to find some new tires, because the ones in the kit are slicks. If this is correct then there's just three questions left:-)

- Does the Revell kit come with round rear lights?
- Anyone got a tips on where to find street tires that fits the kit?
- What is the correct color code or name for the blue color, is it "Cobolt blue"?

Re: Best AC Cobra 427 kit?

If you're after the SC body then yes the Revell kit is that shape, including the Baldwin motion kit, it also has the correct wheels and the side pipes and roll bar in that photo. Howeverthe Baldwin motion comes with rectangular rear lights and does not have the decals you require. The tires you would need are any that will fit a normal Revell size wheel, so pretty much the tires off any Revell kit of an old American car will fit.
I can provide you with any details and photos of the Baldwin motion, but not the re-release 2 in 1 (a green and a blue SC on the box art).

If you do get the re-release I hope you post up progress because I'd like to see what the new kit is like!

I'm no Cobra expert so I can't comment on its accuracy but this is the Fujimi Shelby 427, kit no 12089 [built by Chippy06]. Looks to me as if it's pretty much what you're after....

That's a very nice build of the Fujimi kit, but honestly it's a terrible kit for accuracy and detail. It doesn't come close to being accurate, from the body to the motor to rear wheels/tires. That picture is almost painful to look at, if you compare it to the picture of the real car. The Fujimi kit is just so..."off" unfortunately

I have Monogram's kit #2764 1988 release of the Shelby 427 S/C (the Revell kit is the Monogram kit FYI) and it's molded in blue metallic, has the white stripes, roll bar, full windscreen, and rectangular taillights (I don't know if Revell did the round taillights or not for any of the other variants). For all intents and purposes it represents the car that 356speedster is looking to build from the photo. Long ago I snagged a set of Halibrand wheels, knockoffs & tires from a water-damaged parts box Fujimi GT 40 MkII kit (the tag in the bag says 7130R9000-nice vintage tread pattern, I think they're Good Year tires but I don't have the white letters intended for these tires) that look like they'll be a big improvement over Revell's wheel/tire package. I don't know what tires the latest kit/2828 has, back when Monogram made my kit they threw in Michelin TRX's for the front and Goodyear GT Radials in back, both are laughably incorrect. Otherwise the kit looks really nice; fairly accurate. Due to manufacturer tolerances for plastic wall thickness, the Revell windshield surround is larger in scale than the 1:1 car's surround, but it doesn't look as overly thick as Fujimi's one-piece clear windshield and surround. The only way to make it really accurate is to make it in metal, something most of us aren't able to do.

As for white stripe decals, I often choose to mask/spray them vs. using decals which often don't go over hood scoops very well, and this kit has the kind of scoop which could be agonizing to get a decal to conform to.

I don't know a color code, but if you stick w/Tamiya Mica Blue you'd end up pretty close, perhaps it's dark enough.

The AMT Cobra 289 is a decent Cobra 289 kit, but it has it's share of problems. First it's 1/25 scale so it's a bit smaller than the other Cobras (Monogram's is 1/24), and AMT's tire choices all are pretty lame. The kit has decent detail, it's a better 289 than Fujimi's 427 represents a 427. For most accuracy you'll have to do parts scrounging. I think the old IMC Ford Cougar show car model has a better-detailed Cobra 289 chassis.

Or we can only hope that Accurate Miniatures upholds their promise of a new-tool 1/24 scale Cobra 289 which they have been promising for ages now. They say they got licensing for all Cobra 289 variants; street and race versions yada yada, potentially a gold mine of various kits can be done by them. But they've had this kit "pending" for over two years now and nobody has a clue if/when it will ever happen-they've also promised a Corvette Grand Sport roadster which is only a new body for their Grand Sport kits, and it's been promised/pending for a couple years. If they ever get the 289 out, it should be a terrific kit. But "when" is the question nobody knows...

Re: Best AC Cobra 427 kit?

Like the other fomrum member said, I'm not a Cobra expert, but, I did the Fujimi version and it went real nice in all aspects. Maybe it's not very accurate, but, it can be finished real nice and fast.

Here it's a couple of pictures of my model. Actually, I used that picture you posted as an example of what I wanted.

Revell is nice. There is also a much harder to find 1/16 version of it (I have it, but not finished)

Re: Best AC Cobra 427 kit?

Tamiya also makes a dark Mica Blue, but it's going to be too dark for the application, so I'd try the Mica Blue over black.

I have two of the Revell kit's in progress. I enjoy them alot and probably the best kits from Revell I've ever had.

Re: Best AC Cobra 427 kit?

Vric, your model looks great and it looks like a proper Cobra. The Fujimi Cobras in this thread are certainly well built and detailed, but for me personally they're almost painful to look at because the proportions are so bad. One only needs to study the various models shown here compared to the 1:1 pics to make up their own mind. I'm glad I have the Revell kit w/a set of Fujimi GT40 wheels/tires. Best of both worlds
