shift soleniod problem, HELP!

I have a '99 Durango the check engine light just came on. I have an OBD scanner and it shows code "P0753: shift soleniod A circuit electrical". I called the dealer and they know nothing (of course) about a "shift soleniod A". All they mentioned was an overdrive soleniod. I CAN shift manually through 1, 2, and drive, but it will not go into OD. It will NOT shift automatically. I have tried to search some diagrams and have taken the pan off. I know what the governor pressure solenoid is, but not its exact function.

did you check your fuses? I would think it sould still shift 1-2-3 with out doing it manually. Which engine do you have?

I have the 5.9L and I checked all fuses. Everything checked is okay.

Well the only 2 shift solenoids are the OD and TCC. When you get one you get the other they are one unit. The other two are Gov and transducer. My guess is that the solenoid is shorted to ground. Now the bad news some years you have to drop the entire valve body thanks to Dodge not using a connector on the solenoids. Alot of the later ones do have a connector

If you put it in Drive and go will it automaticaly shift gears?

I called my local Dodge Dealership in Gilbert Arizona & they said that the Shift Solenoid A on a 99 Durango, 5.9 with 4wd is Dodge part # 4617210. Had it in stock for $113. Autozone did not sell & NAPA had to special order it for $123.

Parts person said it looked accessible by dropping the pan.

Go into your local dealership & ask them to show you breakout picture in their computer. Don't know if that part replacement is shown in any of the after market manuals.

Let us know how this goes & if it was much of a challenge.

I called up Rockauto.com to cross the part # and they said that the 4617210 was for 2000 thru 2005. They carried the TCS46 (maintained that it may not work on a 99) for $85.

I would call a dodge parts counter, give them all you specs & make sure you have correct pt # for your vehicle.

Rock auto is 866-762-5288 if you want to check into savings vs convenience. On a part like that, you might be better off with the original dodge part...maybe not. My brother-in-law ordered some air suspension shocks from them for his Tahoe & he got OEM parts for less than half of dealer price.
Everything is still working great after 2 years.

Codes do not say replace parts. They say check it out.
On yours a code 753 points to a 3-4 shift solenoid relay problem or wiring problem.

Go threw the repair flow chart first and let us know what you find.
It may be just a relay or wiring problem

I did not want to see you get on the wrong solenoid there.
It is just a standard repair flow chart that can be found in all of your good repair manuals.
Copy it off so the web site does not lose it.
Chilton or haynes will not have them.
But a factory or All data or mitchell on demand have them.
You can find all of the repair info for your Durango and TSB and parts info.
