Foxbody Mustang GT

I Bought the kit off ebay a few months back, finally getting some time to start looking at it!
The body is not fitting together verry well, they made the kit so the front bumper had to be glued on, very poor design from a builders aspect.

I am going to use wheels, tires and brakes off a 98 Saleen S351 convertable, I might use the motor and supercharger as well...I haven't decided.

My inspiration and reference is my 89 GT

it is a very basic kit. I have the newer AMT Variant. Love the 1:1. I am waiting for the Revell Reissue to come out

Thanks, The 1:1 is a great car that i have been playing with for a few years now, I think it will always be with me and my wife Its a garage queen but I like to drive it hard, take it to the track.....whatever. I bought and built it to drive and enjoy!

I knew the kit was going to be pretty basic, but it was really the only Foxbody Mustang I could find that was not a convertable. Is there another make or a new version?

It's the only GT hatch kit ever made; though Revell is reissuing the '93 Cobra kit which similar. Neither kit is perfect. How are you going to make the LX taillights on your car?

I bought a new '88 LX 5.0 sedan black/gray interior w/optional 3.08 axle on March 6 1988, sure wish I hadn't sold that car 3 years later

I am not sure how I am going to replicate the tail lights. The shape wont be to hard with some styrene and putty, but to get the tranlucent effect to the lens wold be tricky. Any advice?

You must mean a Coupe, or Notch Back as they are called. They never made a 4 door, which to me is a sedan. This is my second one, My first was a Notch which really got me into the cars and the soft spot i have for them I put a set of 3.73's in the rear end of this car and it made a huge differnce in the seat-o-pants meter!

Ford officially called it an LX 2 door sedan, but the common street term is/was notchback. It was a fun car, low-end power was awesome and immediate, but above 60 mph it lost a lot of it's punch; it was all low-end torque. Fun car in the rain

When I build my model of my car, I used Monogram SVO taillights, which are also in Revell's '93 Cobra. I used superglue to fill the outer lenses, then sanded them smooth and painted them w/clear red. IIRC the MPC GT lights are molded to the body? Don't know how to fix that; I'd probably cut them out and try to fit Monogram or scratchbuilt lenses.

Re: Foxbody Mustang GT

Doesn't the MPC kit have clear SVO lenses on the clear parts tree? I believe the AMT version does. If you don't have them, PM or email me and I'll send you a pair.

Yeah the tail lights are molded right into the body, I think i will cut them out and try to use them as a jig to make a set of LX units.

Thanks for the info on the Coupe, I was not trying to be a smarta$$ or break your chops. I just wanted to better understand what you were talking about.

No the whole taillight is molded right into the body. I will PM you, that would be awesome if you have a set for me

Hey Dave!

Good to see you're getting time to work on your models! As for the tail lights, ugh! wtf was Ford thinking with those louvery things! I would suggest cutting them right out, clean up the opening and pick a toothbrush that closely matches the shape. You can file and sand the TB to fit, and it will be translucent like you need. I know, sounds like a LOT of work, but I've been working on my RV project for TWO years!

Re: Foxbody Mustang GT

Hey UC,
I agree those Ford louver tail lights are hidious, That was one of the first things I swapped on the 1:1.
I never thought about using a toothbrush, I'll have to keep that in mind.
Okiemodelbuilder is sending me a pair of SVO tails to modify and install.

I had a little time last night. I was able to get the rearend/control arms and shocks in, along with the engine glued down....I ran out of Flat black so i couldn't get the Tranny crossmember in.

I am building an Off Road H pipe for the exhaust, using the mufflers out of the box and making a set of turn down dumps. Sorry about the blurry pics, My camera doesn't do well up close.

Not a bad job so far on the underside! You planning to use rattle can on the body paint? I'd suggest an auto parts store, get some touch up paint and clear coat. And, like I said, I needed to show you my 'Stang, I call 'er "lil Buzz"

Re: Foxbody Mustang GT

It will be the rattle can and some clear, I was looking at an air brush tonight but cannot justify getting one yet. I am going to build a box that i can paint in with a fan that will draw the fumes out.....we'll see!

I think i finaly have the H pipe made, the glue is drying as we speak.
I'll post some pics tomarrow.

I like the 05, the tribal flames look pretty good. They compliment the racing stripes just right, but what is up with that rear wheel allignment? LOL

Re: Foxbody Mustang GT

they're basically too wide for the fenders. Fujimi wheels and treads. I cut them down, lined everything up, and when I did final assembly they somehow wound up sticking out further than during construction. One of those thing. But, since I was doing this as a quick build and my main focus was the masking for the paint, I decided not to tear into it and try to fix it. Keep up on the updates on your Stang
