Miami Vice
I saw this movie and let me say...WOW...it sucked ass.
Now I've seen the original Miami Vice television series and it wasn't bad. It's not my favorite show but I liked several episodes and overall it wasn't a bad. The movie on the other hand is NOTHING like the show was at all. They didn't try to do an 80's theme or take the formula that worked for the show and use it for modern times in this movie. Now several people are saying, "but it's not suppose to be like the show, it's suppose to be different." Then why name the damn movie Miami Vice if you're not going to do anything as a homage to the series?! The only thing that was the same was the main character's names. The story is about the only thing that was like the old vice. Drug dealers in Miami are smuggling drugs and they must go undercover to find out who, what, when, where, and how. Of course they throw in a twist where Sonny falls for the woman who is helping with the drug shipments. Didn't work. You feel nothing for the characters because you don't really get to know them. The story seems to bounce around a bit and isn't the easiest thing to follow through. It sounds simple but they throw in all these wild cards that it's hard to make it simple. As for the acting, it sucked. Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell don't do their own style. Instead they try to imitate Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson. Now Jamie Foxx wasn't to bad I'll admit that. It wasn't the best but he didn't do an aweful job. Colin Farrell on the other hand tried to be Don Johnson. He tried to sound like him, have his accent, and act like him. It didn't work. Don Johnson plays Don Johnson best. Colin Farrell doesn't play Don Johnson best. I really don't see why they just didn't get Thomas and Johnson. Sure they're older but it would have fit better. Finally, I'd like to add on the accents. Too thick to where it's simple to understand. I know it brings some "realism" but if I pay for your movie I better understand the damn words. Now I know Michael Mann produced this and you'd think he'd take elements of what made the show great and put them into the movie. No. Overall this thing gets two thumbs down.

Re: Miami Vice
Damn... another DVD rental then. It's pretty sad how I can't rationalize seeing anything in the theatre anymore. I did see Pirates 2 but wasn't very impressed and could've waited for DVD. And I thought this one was going to be decent. Colin Farrell isn't much of an actor though so I figured his Crockett would suck ass.

Re: Miami Vice
i saw this last night. honestly, i thought it was pretty good. i've never seen the tv show or anything so i can't really compare it to the old stuff. the character development was quite shitty though. Colin and Jamie's characters had NO background what so ever. i thought it was a good movie though. i liked the soundtrack

Re: Miami Vice
Freakin' awesome!!! I just saw it, totally wht i expected. yes, barely kept with the original, but to see it outside of it's title, loved it.
When i heard Mann was directing it and I saw the previews, I was like, score! The type of cinematography is great! worth it, id see it again. it was simple, no too much dialouge, but required good acting. yes

Re: Miami Vice
I saw this flick yesterday and I must say I was suprised at how good it was. I can't say I've ever watched a single episode of the original Miami Vice so I had no bias or expectations going in. My girlfriend was asking me if it was like the show and I told her besides the hot car, black dude-white dude combo, and what else... the boats(?) it was pretty much its own thing. She thinks it shouldn't have been called Miami Vice or that they should have made some obvious references to the show.
I personally think they should NOT have made any reference to the show whatsoever - I wouldn't even know if they did but that's my take. I also told her that they were smart to call it Miami Vice because I don't think I would have seen this movie if it had been called anything else. I liked it. I especially liked how it was filmed (I thought the Cinematography was the best I have seen in years). I'm not impressed by much in the way of movies these days but throughout this flick I was paying attention to a lot of details. All I've got to say without being a SPOLIER is that the one scene near the beginning that gets the plot in motion my jaw dropped at how graphic it was... I sat back with a smile and couldn't help have a few scenes from Robocop flash by in my head.
