Question My speedometer is going nuts!

I have a 95 Civic vtec, automatic. I put some Euro gauges on it about 8-12 months ago. Ever since, when I drive, the needle bounces around like crazy so I can't even tell how fast im going. (This is great when you're going through speed traps! ) It wasn't too bad at first it only did it once in a while but recently it does it as soon aas I start to drive. Also, when i'm keeping a constant speed, say like 70 on the freeway, the engine shifts into a higher gear/rpms when the needle starts to bounce. I don't know if maybe disconnecting and then reconnecting the whole odometer/speedometer assembly will reset it or what.

This is driving me crazy and it's makiing my gas mileage even worse than it already is with a lead foot like me driving.

Please help!

Re: My speedometer is going nuts!

the gauges should not make a difference where the shift points are or what gas milege you are getting

Re: My speedometer is going nuts!

well, what else could be causing my engine to shift gears? It only does it when the speedometer is going haywire.

Re: My speedometer is going nuts!

well technically, your transmission shifts the gears, and your gauges have nothing to do with the way your car runs or drives, nothing at all, will not make you lose gas milege, will not make your tranny shift gears, your could take out the gauge pod, and guess what?? your car will still go, still change gears, and still use gas, it has really no idea that the gauges are even there, all they do is show YOU what the car is doing, not showing the CAR what to do.

Re: My speedometer is going nuts!

Right, I understand that but I just thought that it was peculiar that my engine would shift at the same time as the gauges acting funny. It's not like the tranny shifts into a whole other gear, its just the rpms go from about 3000-3200 to about 3500 rpm when i'm just going down the freeway keeping a speed of about 70.

Re: My speedometer is going nuts!

Speed sensor ?? That would explain the tranny shifting strange. And maybe the speedo. Check the connections first.

Re: My speedometer is going nuts!

I had some guys at the auto parts store suggest the speed sensor. Would that make my speedometer go nuts too? Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: My speedometer is going nuts!

No you're not coming off as a "dick", it's just when it comes to the electrical stuff and the crap-load of sensors in cars I just don't generally understand. I really hope thats it, that would probably explain why my check engine light comes on every so often. Thanks!

Re: My speedometer is going nuts!

Have you ever had the CE code read ?? It may be a troubleshooting clue. They will throw a code for the speed sensor.

Re: My speedometer is going nuts!

well..at one point my guages were acting up like that...first thing i did was check my interior fuses....turned out a had one that was blown...it was getting blown because of a grounded wire in the engine bay...once a replaced the fuse everthing returned to normal...

Re: My speedometer is going nuts!

I was going to have the auto store hook up thier computer and see why the check engine light was coming on but they only had it for the 96 and up. It would cost me $90 to get a dealership to do it, I figure it probably is the speed sensor but i'll check the fuses too.

Re: My speedometer is going nuts!

its not that hard, speed senor well take care of your speedo jumping around, its not the end of the world those senors do fizzy out, the speed senor has nuthin to do with the tranny shifting, it has one job and it is to tell the speedo your speed through an electrical current.
