Unhappy Transmission Trouble

I Have A 1991 Escort Gt With 5 Speed Trans. It Makes A Grinding Noise In All The Forward Gears And Will Not Move , But It Will Move In Reverse Just Fine Without Any Noise,is This Problem In The Tranny Or Is It Something Else, ??????

Might be too late but have you checked the fluid level?

It sounds to me like it's not going all the way in to gear for some reason.

Have you tried to put it in gear with engine shut off?

Could be a clutch problem too.

Since it works in reverse then I vote that it's a clutch problem

I guess it's also possible that 'gear selector fork' seen in drawing is unhooked.

checked fluid it is full, the puzzling thing is that in all the forward gears the speedo works,i jacked the front wheels up off the ground and they will spin until you touch the brakes ,i can even hold them from turning with my knees it still makes that noise, is it possible the trans axle is broke ??? i have never worked on front wheel drive stuff before...

If you can hold the tire with your knees then the clutch is probably bad. When you hold the tire with your knees the clutch starts slipping. The noise you are hearing could possibly be the clutch disc rivets scraping the flywheel or the pressure plate. You might be able to remove the rubber boot where your clutch slave cylinder is and look with a good flashlight. That's probably where you'll find your noise.
