Unhappy 94 Cherokee Sport Temp Gauge

My temp gauge on '94 Cherokee Sport does not work..Every so often it will fluctuate but then return to no reading..I have replaced my temp sensor/sending unit on engine...Can I place 12 volts on sending unit wire going back to gauge to test wire and gauge?....Thanks,Pete44

Re: 94 Cherokee Sport Temp Gauge

NO!!!

donot apply battery voltage to any wire connected to a gauge.

you can ground the wire after you remove it from the sending unit. The needle should move from one end of the scale to the other when you touch and remove the wire from the block or frame.
