1990 Chevy Lumina Horn

one night around 6 the horn just went off, and kept blowing, until i finally got out and hit the steering wheel, horn went off, when i closed the door i heard the horn honk a little, like a short, then we all went to sleep, then around midnight the horn just went off again, i got pissed got dressed stepped out to an angry neighbor and hit the side of the car, the horn turned off, but i dented the car, oh well, i searched inside and pulled the fuse for the horn and just threw it in the trash in a fit of rage, now im curious what was going on with the horn, im thinking the switch or mounts for the switch in the steering wheel broke or contacts touched somehow, Probably because of the cold weather, it being the dead of winter at the time, any ideas on the cause of this problem?

Yeah you are probably on the right track, have saw this before, the steering wheel vinyl contracts when it gets cold and makes the contacts short together, all you can do is take the horn sounder apart, locate contacts and see whats going on, sometimes a little strip of electrical tape between part of the contacts will fix it, just a trial and error to get it right and not stop it from functioning when you push it.
