91 lumina transmission

My mother in law gave me a 91 lumina. she was going down the road and the car just didnt want to go. I looked at it you can put the car into reverse adn it will move, but in drive the motor just revs up.

could this be a simple problem or do i need a new trans.

check the fluid level first, and if that's full, I'd say your tranny is shot.

My m-i-l said they have checked and it smelled burnt.
