EGR Valve - Clean or Replace?

Hi-
New to this board, so thanks in advance for your help. My wife's 2000 Rodeo stalled the other day. When I had a diagnostic run on it, the mechanic said the EGR valve needed to be replaced. (To my knowledge, we're still on our first at 58,000 mi.). Does this make sense? I've read several posts that recommended cleaning vs. replace. The bill, with new valve, gasket and fuel system cleaning (to "keep carbon from building up on the new one) is gonna run me $494 with labor. Seems steep. Any thoughts?

Thanks much,
Pots

494?

gesh, I see you live in AZ (warmth is good). You pay me 400, I'll fly out and do it for you.

99.9% the EGR AND the EGR port (located behind the butterfly only need to be cleaned).

This is a 20-30 minute job that will cost 1 can of carb cleaner (3 bucks).

So read through the above link and do it yourself.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Had a feeling there was a much easier and cheaper way to handle this. I'll give it a go and post my results. Again, thanks much.

Re: EGR Valve - Clean or Replace?

Hi, my CEL has been on for awhile and the code was for the EGR. Since my engine started and ran fine, I did not get in a hurry to take care of it. After reading how easy it is to clean and seeing the pics posted on here, I bought a can of B12 yesterday and gave it a try. It was easier than I expected and only took about 20min. No CEL last night or today, and I barely touch the gas pedal to cruise down the highway, so I feel pretty certain that my mpg will be better next time I check.
I would like to thank all of the people in this forum for the great help/advice.
