Getting the most out of Dual Voice Coils...

My Kicker's work great now, (just want a bigger badder amp), and i was wondering if there is more than one way to wire the dual voice coils. I was wondering if i could get more out of them by changing the wiring

-Thanks

Re: Getting the most out of Dual Voice Coils...

well yeah you can wire them differently..

dual 2 ohms can be wired at 1 or 4 ohms..
dual 4 ohms can be wired at 2 or 8 ohms..

if you have a pair.. you can wire them together.. and basically..
2 dual 2 ohms can run at .5 ohm, 2 ohms, or 8 ohms
2 dual 4 ohms can run at 1 ohm or 4 ohm.

and the only way youll get more from the subs is if you wire them to get the most power possible out of your amp.

what kind of amp do you have (how many channels and how much rms power at each impeadence..)

and what VRs do you have.. dual 2 or dual 4? and how much rms power can each handle?

we can tell you the best way to wire them once we know this stuff.. but im almost positive youre gonna need a bigger amp.. especially if 500 watts is the max rating on the amp.. that means each sub is prolly getting 100 watts rms each and they should probably be more like 300-350? not sure on the exact VR numbers but.. type a response and we'll do what we can

Re: Getting the most out of Dual Voice Coils...

What's your amp and how are your subs currently and what's the box... more power one of the most inneficient ways to make your subs louder..... the best ways IMO is more subs, better (more efficient and greater excursion) subs and better enclosures.

Re: Getting the most out of Dual Voice Coils...

THE BEST way to get the most bass is to get the BIGGEST SUB you can get, get the BIGGEST AMP you can get, and the BIGGEST BOX you can get, with the BIGGEST PORT you can get, and turn that shit UP and JAMMMMM....

...j/k...

Re: Getting the most out of Dual Voice Coils...

They are the 4 ohm, Dual Voice Coils, 300Watt RMS. I do not know the specifics on my amp, i bought it used from my cousin, it is an older 500W max Xplod 4 channel. The two subs are in a Sealed box, I would also like to get a new amp...Any suggestions, I was thinking about a 600Watt 2 channel Rockford Fosgate off of ebay...Any suggestions on this one as well?

-Thanks

Re: Getting the most out of Dual Voice Coils...

yeah man i bet youre hardely getting any power off of that amp.. like maybe 50 rms to each sub.. just a guess but whatever it is its not enough.. bumpinstang said he wasnt a big fan of just adding power to get SPL.. but theres a huge difference between 100 & 600 rms.. get the amp if you can get it cheap.. rockfords are decent. if its 600 wrms @ 4 ohms itll work nicely. but i do agree that changing up the box can have a huge affect..what type of box are you running (ported/sealed/bandpass)? how much volume does it have.. if ported, then to what frequency?

Re: Getting the most out of Dual Voice Coils...

Ohh maybe up to 200....and i would like to sell my current amp as soon as i get a new one...any ideas on how much i can get out of my Xplod? The box is a sealed, and I am not sure what size it is, I bought it with the subs in it for 80 bucks. Also, i have them set up as downward firing right now...it is what position they bump the hardest in, With a bigger badder amp, will I be able to put them normal, I like the look of seeing them work ...

neither would really work well with your amp.. (1 ohm wont work; 4 ohms is how it is now im assuming and youre not gettin much power.) try and find an amp that will give you like 500 or more rms @ 4 ohms.. youll notice a huge difference in how your subs sound.

Re: Getting the most out of Dual Voice Coils...

Ok, Thanks for the great site. Also, just wondering... I have a friend that has a 1000Watt amp, i don't know anything about it, and I believe it is a mono channel. Can i just hook both subs up to the one channel by doubling up the connections?

-Thanks

Re: Getting the most out of Dual Voice Coils...

if the amp is 1000w rms at 4 ohm then it will work fine. just make sure to turn your gain down. the best way to adust your gain is to start it at the lowest, then turn your volume up to what you normally listen to and adust your gain just until you can hear you subs start to distort. then back the gain off a little so the distortion goes away. as far as running the subs in one channel. it works fine, people do it all the time. on a two channel amp it is called "bridging in mono". if you get a mono amp that is 4 ohm stable then wire both subs down to two ohm and connect them both in the single channel. if you get a two channel amp you can either wire both subs to two ohm and use both channels (one sub per channel) or leave them at two ohm and bridge them in mono ( use the positive from channel one and the negative from channel two).

if you happen to buy a one ohm stable amp ( can be pricey) then wire like the crutchfield link above shows. two dual 4 ohm subs down to one ohm
