Why is the auto tranny a 4 speed??

Why is the auto tranny a 4 speed?? Wouldn't it have better gear spacing with a 5 speed? Or at least have an overdrive gear.

The 4 speed auto DOES have an overdrive.
And GM does make a 5 speed automatic for use in heavy duty trucks, vans, etc.

Re: Why is the auto tranny a 4 speed??

Cost.

4 speed auto isn't cheap. Add two more gears...and the pricing is INSANE.
Besides, with the auto you don't need more than the four. Sure, fifth would be nice for highway use, but it gets very expensive to even add that one gear.
4th gear on the A4 acts as an overdrive. Shouldn't be using that when you are racing.

Re: Why is the auto tranny a 4 speed??

Not sure of the exact answer for that. I just know that it shouldn't be shifted into a gear less than 1:1.
5th and 6th are both less than 1:1 with the manual and 4th is less than 1:1 with the auto.
It is hard on the tranny. Not 100% on why though.

I agree with this comment, but many other car manufacturers have 5 speed automatics these days. Some have six speed autos.

GM is suffering and losing sales sticking with a 4 spd auto in their new cars. Sure you only NEED 4 gears, but the 5 speed autos provide better performance.

Re: Why is the auto tranny a 4 speed??

No way, there are no GM 5 spd auto cars, because it takes money to develop them and put them into production. The 4 speed tranny is based on all the previous models and is cheap to produce-its actually GM's fault since they are so slow and conventional and their buddies from Borg-warner, etc. (even hyunday produces a 5 spd autos now) you can swap a 5 spd one from a truck, its just a bit longer. More gears means the car goes faster, less strain on the engine, more economy. The technology is all there ( rally cars have hydrolic 7 speed auto trannies, $30000 each) Autos generaly require less gearing because the way they are designed-they have planetary gears.Soon my friends, soon... There are 7 and 8 spd manuals from daimler-crysler, mercedes-mclaren, maibach and jaguar (I bet those are fun)

Wrong answer.

If I dragged my car more often it would be an auto.
