Help!!! need new exaust manifold

I was told by my local jeep dealer that i need a new exaust manifold and would cost about $820 installed WOW!!!
i told him noway cant afford it so im going to give it a shot
ive been lurking around forums and sites trying to get as much info as possible before i go to work.
i got myself a haynes manual to have on hand just incase but really want some opinions on the difficulty of this job.
ive never done this before but am handy with tools and good with my hands
what im looking for is some type of site that walks you through the proccess also what tools will be needed(any specialty tools) and also would like too hear from other first timers that tackled a job like this and what they thought
i really think i can save myself about $300-$400
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Re: Help!!! need new exaust manifold

What engine??

Others will comment also but I would suggest you tag every connection as you disconnect it...both sides for later reference.

take some pictures - digital if you can.

I don't know of any web sites but you should be fine with the manual you have.

Just spray all exhaust bolts with penetrating oil and let them sit over nite if possible.

good luck

JD

Re: Help!!! need new exaust manifold

Just thinking about glass's reply.

what are the indications that it needs the manifold??

Maybe all it needs is the gasket.

there are two types of exaust manifolds, one has expansion joints, and the other doesnt, chances are you have the one that doesnt.it more than likely is cracked where the pipes go into the collector.go to auto zone they have a good replacement it has the expansion joints they can have you one overnite.donot go to dealer unless you have deep pockets.its relativly easy to install just time consuming but depending on you skill level try it your self or buy the parts and have someone else do it

Re: Help!!! need new exaust manifold

have a friend put a wet rag over exaust pipe while your under vehicle and listen for hissing at leak location.ive replaced the exaust manifolds on all three of my jeeps, they get hot you run thru a water puddle and cool the metal quick it cracks, piss poor design by jeep.they fixed by installing expansion joints
