Question about AWD---don't shoot me!
Hey People!
If this is a tired question please just direct me to the previous post or something..... I am about to get a 240sx and drop in the RB26DETT---what I want to know is, is it possible, and how is it done, to convert the 240sx to AWD? How much does this cost, what needs to be bought, etc etc....Pretty much anyone I ask say's it's theoretically possible, but they don't know how or who to ask---so who better to ask than the experts on AF? Re: Question about AWD---don't shoot me!
No---Bumble Bee Engineering puts the swap in, Mounts, downpipe, etc, gets car running, $2k.
Check them out, seriously. There is a thread titled "Bumble Bee Engineering" that has their contact info! So-plus engine at approx $3k, that's half of what you all expect. I believe the rb25/26, a year from now, will seriously overtake the popularity of the Silvia Swap, imho. mB |

Re: Question about AWD---don't shoot me!
I believe that the KA is going to stay unpopular just the way I like it. AWD on a 240? Read the RB question sticky at the top of the forum. The first question down. 15k. Would you mind telling me where you're going to get 15k for this? If you have the money, good luck and more power to you if you complete it. In my opinion, the swap is cool but too much money and work. AWD conversion isn't too smart. KA-T is very easy and can pretty much kill any of these engines stock on about 8psi and a little tuning. Torque is good.

Re: Question about AWD---don't shoot me!
Thanks a lot---great thread....Didn't really get too specific about the AWD, but I think it is a highly specialized sort of thing is why.....
I might opt-out for the RB25, but from my current supplier, the rb26 comes with the 25 shift linkage and trans---I'll confer with BBE before I buy anything to just get an exact estimate on the labor to see if I'll see major savings..... As far as I know, BBE and McKinney are the only ones who are doing these swaps---I didn't catch the name of the people in that sticky thread but will go back and see....So that makes 3? BBE's turnaround is 2 weeks, and McKinney is a month, so 3 weeks is right in between. But those people in the sticky seemed to be more highly priced than BBE....... I'll do the engine swap then work up to the AWD. Don't have $15k to drop into this project all at once, but if I work my butt off, can get it all done in parts, no problem. I'm not a rich kid, but a voracious worker.... mB |

Doesn't an RB26DETT front clip cost over $8000? or ~5000-6000 for the engine? If you want a good power/money ratio get the KA-T, RB26 is mostly for bragging rights given the cost.

Re: Question about AWD---don't shoot me!
You can find better prices.....Our current supplier gets RB26DETT to destination, eng, trans, ecu, harness for $4500. I know this isn't the best price there is to find, but I prefer these guys cuz of the warranty.

Re: Question about AWD---don't shoot me!
RB26=waste of money. RB25 is much easier of a swap and makes plenty of power for the 240. It doesn't take much to push 2700 pounds quickly. Lets face it, if the little SR20 can run 13s with mild bolt ons, then what can the RB25 do with mild bolt ons? 12s maybe? I don't know bc I look at it as a waste of money for those engines when all the power you will ever need is already there. All it needs is tuning and some boost. Needs less money too. AWD? What are you planning on doing with your car? You will immediatly screw up your weight distribution. You should really reconsider the AWD especially if you dont have the money now. Work your butt off for mods and I guaruntee you will be plenty happy with those.

Putting the AWD system into a 240SX is on of the most difficult things I have ever seen, and I have never seen it done.
The transfer case on the SKyline is not a locked unit but rather has a few clutches that engage and disengage at the ECU's will depending on wheel slip. Installing the entire system to make that operable is a huge task. Parts are ALL OVER the Skyline for it, including a reservoir inside the trunk ont he (Japanese) drivers side. I dont see how this is really feasible for anyone who does not have a huge wallet. |
