Low Clutch

i have a 97 cherakee limited, the clutch pedal was biting at the half way point, then suddenly droped and bit near the floor.Pumped it for some time and it was back to half way again. Now it has droped again and cant get it in to gear at all if engine is running. Is it the clutch or one of the cylinders(fluid in resavoir is full) any ideas would be a help as a clutch is very dear in uk.

THANKS IN ADVANCE

PEZ

I have a 1991 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 that is having similar problems. I left it in storage for over a year when I went to Iraq. Now that I am back, the clutch perdal acts funny. When it is cold, I have to pump it up to get it to get enough play in it to get it into gear, after using it a while it acts well enought to drive fine. I have bled it and ensured the fluid level is full. I ASSUME it is the slave or master cylinder, but I can't find any leaks, and there doesn't appear to be any air getting into the system.

Re: Low Clutch

It sound like you slave cylinder is bad, I had a 92 ford explorer and had similar problams, a new slave cylinder fixed it.

Re: Low Clutch

My 89 had this issue as well, but before I got it home it blew one of the lines. Age and old fluid I would guess, replaced the $20 dollor line after flushing all the old fluid out, and now it acts new.

Try Bleeding the slave cylinder have somebody pump the clutch pedal and hold open the bleeder valve just like brakes. Try a couple of times and check the fluid level. If no go probally a bad slave cylinder or possible a bad master cylinder.

Re: Low Clutch

have you tried to gravity bleed it?
If that does not work change the master cylinder, I had the same problem, then I changed my master and the clutch was perfect.
