Question Tranny problems 84 Grand Wagoneer

Just purchased an 84 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Went to pick it up this weekend and about 10 miles down the road it stop moving forward. We got it off the road and started looking for the problem. This is what I know. The engine runs fine but when you move the lever in to any gear it does not engage. We checked the linkage and it seemed to be moving fine. Does anyone have a clue about what the problem could be?
