I guess they were trying to build dramatic tension but it just got old. And thus is the essence of Walking Dead. There are some great scenes and cool gore peppered between long stretches of:

I still wonder how Herschel found/trapped/lured Sophia into that barn in the first place. His wife was in there and I accept that... and I even accept that he corralled some extra walkers during the hunt for his wife (assuming she turned and then, yanno..... walked) but when in the fuck did he find Sophia and toss her in there???

Did she walk onto the farm? Did he take daily strolls through the woods to find walkers?

How the fuck did she not get completely eaten anyway?? Did she fight off a walker after just a nibble?

And whenever however Herschel found her, how did he get that barn door open without the other walkers leaving or biting him? Did he take her to the sex loft and drop her down?

And thats the problem with zombies. They are dead... but live... they are rotting away, but still have to eat- and they eat each other... unless they're in a pack, then they don't eat each other...

Honestly it seems like all you would truly need to safeguard your home from zombies would be a pretty decent fence.
