good oil is important, how important is oil filter?
I know mobil 1 is way better than quaker state, for example.
What I dont know about is oil filters. Are there different grades/types? Also, are the differences in running good vs average quality filters just marginal, or substancial like the oil itself...? |

oil filters are veary imortant. factory oil filters have plugs that stop the oil from draing out of the filter and into the pan when the cars not running. some gereric filters dont. and thats just not good to start a car without oil in the filter.

Filters are easily as important as oil, if not more so. If you're running Mobil 1 with an oil filter that leaves metal shavings in your oil, don't count on your engine lasting long!

Right on. Filter is very very important. I only trust OEM or Pure1. A local guy used to work somewhere testing these things. Fram is the worst. And be sure to safety wire the filter on. Cant do much filter if you blow it off (happens on my car all the time).

Quote:
OEM is stock mitsu filters for anyone not familiar with that term (Original Equipment Manufacturer), from the 1g turbo cars (the larger filter). Pure1 is made by Purolator. Not the cheapest at 5-6 bucks, but well worth the added cost based on what I said above.

I'm not sure how well they filter, but they alledgedly have provisions for safety wiring it on. Which is cool.

Re: good oil is important, how important is oil filter?
I could have sworn I read something about K&N filters being sub-par for our cars...I am almost certain I read it on Tuners, but I can't find it now that I'm searching for it. I don't think it will be a big deal for one or two oil changes. As long as you keep an eye on your oil level and quality, that's all you can really do. Like Kevin says, OEM filters are the most highly recommended!

Re: good oil is important, how important is oil filter?
I have been running the K&N for the last 30xxx miles with no problems at all. Before that I tried a bunch of others and didn't really like them that much. As for the safety wiring....wow, I never knew what those 2 holes were at the end of the filter (on the big 1" nut at the bottom for easy removal).
