2005 Toyota Matrix vs 1997 Honda Civic

I currently have a 1997 Honda Civic D16Y8 5 speed, it's got like 250,000 miles, recently burnt a couple valves, needs timing belt done, etc. Probably like 3 or 400 bucks to get it running again.

I have someone who offered me to buy their 2005 Toyota Matrix 5 speed, 235,000 miles for 1200. Could probably offer her less to be honest.

My question is to you all, what are your opinions? Should I keep the Honda? Should I get the Matrix to replace it? Currently the Honda is not running properly due to the valve issue, so it's inoperable until I fix it. I'm really on the fence because I've known Matrix's are great cars. Honda's are too, and I just can't make the best choice. Lol

The Matrix is an eh car. With that kind of mileage its a ticking time bomb. You're better off fixing the Honda. If something would go wrong with it you could get another D16 the same day or even look into the immense amount of engine swaps available.

Yeah, that's why I even posted this because I know that also. The Matrix is overall not a Civic. I love that POS. I literally could've bought a brand new car, but instead decided to keep the POS and buy a brand new Harley. I know the old Hondas are generally easier to work on too, swapping my girlfriends corolla engine at 265k was sort of a pain in the ass. I also hate the fact that my Honda uses so much oil, it's stupid. I do think you're right though, I should probably just keep the Honda. It does kinda just keep going. I mean it drove home, blown head gasket, 2 burnt (chipped) valves in cylinder 1. Had absolutely 0 compression in 1. It been getting oil in my coolant my buddy pointed out, and since he said that, I noticed it's been like that for a long time, I thought the coolant was just dirty. Lmfao still ran.
