1992 Maxima SE minor upgrades

At long last, the Mass Flow Air sensor arrives tonight and the Cattman intake next Wednesday. May the stumbling never return!!!!!

While I was taking off the stock air filter and all that comes with it up to the throttle body, I noticed how complex the entire thing is. More than it needs to be. Having worked on the Honda Accord (cir 1990-1993), Honda's approach is simple and uncomplex. The Maxima is my first Nissan that I'm actually working on and what a difference. What I did notice is the rather small opening for air to get to the filter. Why so small opening for a large engine? And the opening was behind the headlight. Also, what is up with the extra container under the Mass Flow Air sensor? What the heck is that for? Stored air?

I also noticed a lot of black soot in the throttle body, so I took some throttle body cleaner and really cleaned it. It took 5 rags to get it cleaned out. Tonight I'll go back with a long q-tip for more cleaning.

Upon further inspection of the tube that connects to the throttle body, I noticed a split on the tube right under the clip that secures the tube. I'm sure this is how most of the soot got into the throttle body. Other than prying the filter box out and almost putting my eye out in the process, all went well.

Of course this is nothing compaired to some of the other things I've done on cars or not even come close to what most of ya'll do to your Maxima's, but hey, I got to start somewhere with this car. Well, I did replace the door lock timer when I first got the car. Oh, and the left axle, but i had a shop do that for me.

Now the 1988 MR2 is another story.

Update

Got everything installed last night. Wow what a difference. Partly due to the air intake and partly due to driving my tired old 1988 MR2 for 2 weeks.

The Intake is really nice. Everything just bolted right on. Except for the long tube. Still couldn't figure out where the heck that would go since the battery was in the way. But I didn't use it. Hats off to Cattman Performance.

Now that the Max is back and running, the MR2 is slated for a long overhaul.
