Engine design?
In 1949, Cadillac and Oldsmobile released new OHV V8 engines. Most car makers switched to OHV V8 engines but a few car makers stayed with straight 8 engines until mid 1950s. I think that Chrysler Corp was the last car maker to switch from flathead straight 6 to OHV 6 engines.
