Emissions exempt . . .

How old does a car have to be before it is considered exempt from emissions inspections?

This is a State run thing and even different thruout the State. Most states have emission testing for major metropolitan areas only. This means if you live outside the testing area(or the car is registered outside the testing area), you don't need to be tested. In my case, northern Florida, I don't have to worry about emission testing at all which is why I can drive a "euro" version car with no cat converters. Some states even have exemptions for cars that drive less than 3,000 miles.

I would guess a car is exempt after it qualifies as an antique. I am not sure, but I think that is somewhere around 25 years old.

East coast Canada where I live, there are no emission restrictions at all. Friend of mine has a Chevette (heh) with straight pipes to the cylinders, no mufflers or cats or anything

I think 1972 and older are exempt for AZ. However on newer cars, they don't need to be tested for 5 years. I am the original owner on my '97 and have not gotten any notices to take it in. Alex's Neon is 5 yrs old as of Sept. He did NOT get an emissions notice...so maybe I won't have to when my car turns 5 in May.

In texas it was 1974 or older, i know this because i have a 1974 vette with strait pipes coming strait from the headers you can smell the 93 octane and tell that i have no cat or muffler, i also know this because i used to work for an inspection station!

No testing in Michigan (at least non up here) so there are no cats or precats on my VR4s. Definately gives the car even more power and it tweeks the nose of the Environmentalists that I know (my sister being one).
