82-Year-Old Ex-Beauty Queen Stops Intruder by Shooting Out Tires

Saturday, April 21, 2007
AP

WAYNESBURG, Ky. — Miss America 1944 has a talent that likely has never appeared on a beauty pageant stage: She fired a handgun to shoot out a vehicle's tires and stop an intruder.

Venus Ramey, 82, confronted a man on her farm in south-central Kentucky last week after she saw her dog run into a storage building where thieves had previously made off with old farm equipment.
Ramey said the man told her he would leave. "I said, 'Oh, no you won't,' and I shot their tires so they couldn't leave," Ramey said.
She had to balance on her walker as she pulled out a snub-nosed .38-caliber handgun.
"I didn't even think twice. I just went and did it," she said. "If they'd even dared come close to me, they'd be 6 feet under by now."
Ramey then flagged down a passing motorist, who called 911.
Curtis Parrish of Ohio was charged with misdemeanor trespassing, Deputy Dan Gilliam said. The man's hometown wasn't immediately available. Three other people were questioned but were not arrested.
After winning the pageant with her singing, dancing and comedic talents, Ramey sold war bonds and her picture was adorned on a B-17 that made missions over Germany in World War II, according to the Miss America Web site.
Ramey lived in Cincinnati for several years and was instrumental in helping rejuvenate Over-the-Rhine historic buildings. She returned to Kentucky in 1990 to live on her farm.
"I'm trying to live a quiet, peaceful life and stay out of trouble, and all it is, is one thing after another," she said.
LOL. She had to balance on her walker to shoot out the tires.

With what a baseball bat? I seriously doubt it.

Actually, a good looking woman back in 1944 when she was crowned Miss America. She has my vote.

So what you're saying is, if the intruder had been armed...it would've been better for the lady to NOT be armed?

Absolutely, it's much better to trust your life to the mercy of criminals than trying to protect it yourself. Look at the statistics, I'm sure they'll show that only armed citizens are the victims of violent crimes.

this is something that is open for debate.

i) if an armed criminal is the kind who is willing to shoot, whether or not you have a gun doesn't make the slightest bit of difference.
ii) if the armed criminal only has a gun for intimidation, you being armed has two possible effects. it will either deter the criminal or it will encourage the criminal

this is something we try and force into kids who come to our martial arts class.
parading around showing that you "know kung fu" only serves to make people want to test you even more. In a fight, prancing around waving your arms and proclaiming your skills will make them more likely to want to punch your face in.
having a gun and pointing it at an armed criminal is likely to make them more likely to use their gun.

there's a reason why the police prefer compliance in certain situations.
i'm willing to bet that a lot of deaths in crime are a result of "have a go heroes".

Re: Here's one for the gun control crowd

Sorry, but I would prefer not to find out the hard way whether I was dealing with a "type I" or "type II" criminal. If ANYONE points a weapon of any kind at me in a threatening manner, I will disable or kill them the first opportunity I get. I think the loss of human life should always be avoided if possible, even if the human in question is a bottom-feeding piece of garbage. However, if it's a "me or them" situation, I'm always going to take the route of self-preservation.

Re: Here's one for the gun control crowd

even if action might mean your death and inaction might mean you would live?
typically used scenario:

guy points a gun at you and demands your wallet.
your reaction would be?

Re: Here's one for the gun control crowd

Clearly, the pro-gun lobby would rather not read the text of this article, but rely on a feel-good headline. The alleged perpetrator was in a storage shed, not threatening anyone. When confronted, he made to leave.

Drunken Monkey is right on the money - the police detest 'gung-ho' vigilantes because they increase the chance of someone getting hurt.

What exactly was there in that shed that was worth risking her life for? Having shot out thee offenders tires, she put herself in a situation where she may have been stuck with a cornered armed man. What if there had been no 'passing motorist' to do what she should have done for her? How long can an elderly woman hold an offender at gunpoint if there's nobody to call the police?

Her actions were stupid. No property is worth risking your life for.

Re: Here's one for the gun control crowd

Well Im glad to hear that she was armed so that she could defend for herself. I think that people should have guns if they know how to use them. I mean common do people really think that its the gun's fault that the trigger was pulled? Its not its the persons fault. Now im not saying give some mental person that just got out of his white padded room a gun. By all means lets do backround checks. But lets not take guns away. Becuase much like anything else that is taken away, it will become more used. Becuase then there is the thrill of having it, going against the law. They will be black marketed *is that a word?* even more, they will be snuck around the boarders. So lets have the guns, learn how to use them, do backround checks. So when someone is faced at night by a robber, or when a person is home alone and someone tries to get in they can defend themselves
