The bouncing tach

I've recently purchased a 1969 TR 6.
It's pretty well sorted out (I think) but there are enough little things needed to keep my happy. I'm in New England so for now it's sitting inside.
Todays question is about the tachometer. While the car is running the tach is certainly not maintaining a specific RPM. It's bouncing up and down at least 500 to 800 RPM,s
The actual idle is not changing.
I am in a learning curve but like to learn.
Thanks
Tony
