Check for rust in the floorboards. Start it from cold and have a nice long drive. Engage the 4wd; if it's from a farm, take a drive through the fields. Make sure the trans shifts properly and everything works.

Basically, check it out as you would with any used vehicle; the rust in the floorboards is the only thing special to check that I know of.

Price? Check www.kbb.com or www.edmunds.com for general price guidelines in your area.

To be honest i would consider if you really want an automatic. I had an auto 93 and i ended up trading it in. It really takes some of the fun out of driving a wrangler. I really didnt like how it handled offroad. I bought a 5 speed and have never looked back.

I second the manual trans; but some folks just gotta have the auto.

I have an auto in my 95 wrangler. I love it. This is the first thing that I have owned with an auto, every other thing has been from a 3 speed to a 5 speed.
One thing I like is on the trail your not shifting all of the time and the auto is easier on drivetrain parts. Less likely to snap axles with the automatic. Just my opinion though.
